A poll found that 48 per cent of women now feel undaunted by tackling technological tasks around the house compared to 47 per cent of men.
The stereotype of women turning to their partners for help with electrical items was also demolished by the study which discovered 85 per cent of men no longer deem themselves the most competent member of the household.
Thirteen per cent of men confessed that they look to their wives and girlfriends for advice on dealing with computers, DVD players, televisions and other devices.
Research by the electrical retailer Comet disclosed that more than 90 per cent of women feel confident setting up a new TV and surround sound system.
However, men still appear more attached to their technological toy, with 56 per cent saying their rely on them in their daily lives, compared to 50 per cent of women.
Bill Moir, Comet’s head of marketing, said: “This shows the extent to which both men and women are embracing new technology.
"It appears that men are no longer the sole IT Director in the home, as women become increasingly tech savvy and reap the benefits of today’s gadgets and gizmos.”
