SETI Picks Up Regular Laser Pulse Emanating From Space

Several years ago Bhathal, a researcher at the University of Western Sydney, suggested that a likely form of extraterrestrial communication would be laser bursts. He set up a facility at his lab which sweeps a nearby volume of space, within about 100 light years, for laser bursts that come in a regular pattern. Any kind of communication would likely be distinguished from background noise by coming in repeated or non-random patterns.
And a few months ago, Bhathal found the kind of regular pattern he's been looking for. He's been analyzing it and seeking a repeat pattern in the same area of space ever since. Though he's cautious about claiming it as a genuine extraterrestrial signal, his discovery has been making local news.

it's been said imagination is more important than knowledge, but perhaps Bhathal is "cautious about claiming it as a genuine extraterrestrial signal" for more practical reasons. things strangely like it have happened before?

I read in a book on laser design about naturally occuring lasers that aren't phased but are of a single wavelength of em energy emitted by stars. given other repeating phenomenae that might interfere with such emissions, it's still plausible that this is a a natural phenomenon. However, I will watch this story with interest

Let me just say that if our alien neighbors do arrive, I will go out of my way to give constant crap to all the arrogant, non-believers who were convinced that we were alone in this vast universe, and insisted on putting down those who actually tried to think for themselves rather than going along with the masses.
On a side note, if aliens do come to our planet a lot of religious people are going to think it is some kind of trick. My family is very religious and I know that if aliens showed themselves, they would think it was one of the "fake saviors" that the Bible talks about coming in the "end times". I don't know what they would do.

I'm just going to throw this out there as a forewarning, let's try our best, and not be assholes to the aliens. I mean, it's the least we can do. If they're lame, we'll just blow them off, but let's do our best, and not be dicks.

SETI's fundamental mistake has been to assume that any advanced civilization on other planets must use radio waves, presuming that their technology mirrors our own.

It's funny how you like to pronounce things so drastically.
Radio waves are A way of communicating over massive distance. No one assumed it was the only way. I mean they sponsored this for goodness sake. And it's a little early to be assuming this is the universal means of alien communication and shaking your head in disgust at those who thought radio waves were a possibility.
No one ever assumes that an alien world's technology must "mirror" ours. But we can only check the things we know about. Like radio waves. Or lasers. Jeesh.

First up , its nice to know that we humans are looking for things other than radio signals, being that celestial bodies such as stars, pulsars & condensing clouds of that have you emit Radio signals.
The idea of laser pulse communication is (and has been) around sense the 60s, and where as we can only use it in "line of sight" who knows how others (Alien Life) can use the same.
As far as i know Lasers are not a natural occurring event, and other than a stray satellite, i have no explanation other than Extra Terrestrials.
He is right to not jump the gun, others on the internet are not as forgiving, and everyone is looking for a new punching bag (now that Balloon boy has landed safe).Damn I hope its not a stray satellite.

There is no reason to believe that another intelligent life form has any semblance to us, nor should they be expected to use the electromagnetic spectrum for communications. As a matter of fact we are probably considered prehistoric and antiquated, mostly because we are controlled by government rules. Laser could also be used as a guidance system and not necessarily as a communications searching for other intelligences, then again these pulses could be emaninating from an object that is naturally sending out linear laser pulses. To look for ET's in space one must also think like an ET and that is intellectually over and above what we would expect to find.

Searching for laser communications is very odd, as it would require the civilization sending out the messages to be doing so as a beacon, very deliberately. Lasers, unlike radio communications, do not emanate in all directions, and must be aimed at their intended target. If you search for laser communications you have to have the expectation that the extraterrestrial life wants to reach us, which is especially odd since SETI is not transmitting signals, only looking to receive them.

This alien race would have had to have beaten the lightspeed barrier, or are capable of time travel in some way. (went back in time in the same space, sent laser then)Or it was a stray beam from a concert in another solar system years ago.

Viero - It would take a lot of energy to fire a beacon laser. Even if they are shooting them at random it seems clear that stray communications would be rare as they would be deliberately fired at the object with which they were attempting to communicate.
