Marin Soljačić couldn't sleep. The problem was his wife's Nokia cell phone. The tyrannical device beeped on the bedside table when it needed to be plugged in. It could not be disabled.
Instead of taking a hammer to the phone, Soljačić marveled at the fact that this device, and billions of others like it, was sitting a few feet away from all the electricity it could ever need. Why couldn't it receive power wirelessly, just as laptops get Wi-Fi?
A physics professor, Soljačić dug into the problem and learned that if you could get two magnetic fields to resonate -- to sing the same note, in effect -- they could transfer an electric current. With two large magnetic coils, he found a way to throw 60 watts across a room, powering a lightbulb. MIT, his employer, quickly patented the technology and encouraged Soljačićto start a company."
Invisible speakers, guarding man's best friend, psychic video games, an unbreakable e-reader and much more at the link.

This is incredible but as mentioned in the article is it safe?
The Sci-Fi future gets closer but will there be any dark side effects?

about time, a hundred years is a long wait. the next step will be using the earth's field. this is the very thing that broke tessla; his benefactor, westinghouse, was invested in selling electricity and stopped his research.
that this is on the market now has vast implications. - 2 years ago

This is the first line of products to come from these advancements in technology. They can be ordered online, or found at your local Target or Radioshack.

Teslas wireless energy in Colorado when he turned the power on the grass turned blue with electricity and it barely worked plus he had to make a cell phone tower sixe transmitter it worked terribly but it was practically his idea

You are correct about Tesla's attempts. Eric Giller actually couldnt not have discuss these advancements with out discussing Tesla within the first 5 minutes. Here is a link to the video of him at TED Talks.

This is a great break thru for society, but it could have been made if they wanted it to.. Meaning the way of the old is to make as much money as possible, nowadays new innovative ways like this will take over. We will start living responsibly like the natives once did. _ILML

i love how at the bottom of the recap you ask 'is it safe?' Are cell phones safe, is wifi safe? No one really knows, I have a strong suspicion that being surrounded by wifi in your home, especially when resting a laptop on your lap is dangerous as the signals must go right through you...

"As DEMOfall in September, before an audience of sleepy journalists and venture capitalists, Emo Labs CEO Jason Carlson took the stage with a TV and a giant set of speakers playing the Beach Boys.
Then he whipped off the speaker box to reveal the real source of the sound: a sheet of clear plastic. There were audible gasps. Dozens of digital cameras flashed at once. Emo had invented invisible speakers.
"I can't tell you how many times we've sat in front of engineers, and they keep asking, 'Where's the sound coming from again?'" says Carlson. "It's like their minds don't want them to believe it." Emo went on to win $500,000 and the conference's DEMOgod title."
