Google to restrict access to free web news

To make this happen, Google will adapt its First Click Free program. At the moment, users' first clicks on any article are free for an unlimited number, so long as they don't click through any more links from any piece.
The latest amendments mean that people reading news online via Google will be prompted to register or subscribe to a news site after reading five free stories from that publisher in a day.
The move comes after some publishers (ahem, Murdoch) kicked up a huge fuss and accused Google of profiteering from news sites' content at their expense.

Hillarious. What a cave in. Google doesn't poffiteer from it, it acts like a search engine and nothing else- you get a litisting of releveanlt and interesting news stories you probably wou;dn't see at ALL otherwise. Google shows none of the content of that news, just the link TO it! The value is all in the New site's OWN freely provided content. Murdoch is an evil inveterate imbecile.

Most news publishers won't opt out of the goog news feature because their pages views will drop dramatically, this whole thing is being blown out of proportion. If publishers of news start charging to see content it better be really damn good and unique info or else people won't pay.

bet Google would not give in so quick to Murdock had this been 15 years ago or billions of dollars earlier.

Google should set its sites for NewsCorp instead of Microsoft. I guess you can't take on all the evil giants at once. Who is gonna take on Google when they turn evil tho?

Legitimate media of every sort haved long known their profit comes from advertising revenue. If you can't make it on the advertising you sell, you are highly unlikely to make it. Those sites who chose this option are going to feel deeply, the meaning of the word "backfire."

The headline may be a bit misleading. Google is not doing the censuring. But Google sucks anyway, just ask anyone who supports internet freedom in China.

first the banks are going to charge for using cash machines, now they want to charge for news, or block access to it! god i hate this world!
rupert murdoch needs swallow a load of acid in my book, what a horrible vile little pathetic creature he is!
oh well at least this sets out the heroes from the dribbles of p*ss! meaning, the genuine people who want real honest news out there will continue to write stories etc, whereas parasitic corporations (news corp) would probably slit your throat for the pound in your pocket! - 2 years ago

here's a huge opportunity for another company to take over Google's position in the news delivery market. if they want to sway for the major news corporations then they can face the consequences when readers find a free alternative to get their information.
let the big names squabble... we as internet users should be happy to uproot the monopoly on information distribution

This is sad news.
The first true 'free era' on the Internet is about to end ; with not even a whimper from the powerless people( such as I) that base much of their 'digital life' speculating on those very facts.
Facts.... facts are the basis of change and that if shared , can edify... Stagnate the flow of facts; increase the length of the status quo. ( war coverage,...)
I understand the move but think it to be in the wrong direction. This path (seams to me) over burdened with contentious conflicts which are at this time non-existent. Heres why.
The world is built on a ancient thousand year old system of 'scarcity' in a contemporary reality that FOR 'IT'S' VERY SURVIVAL HAS TO BE BASED ON ABUNDANCE in fuel , resources and yes ; information.
For antiquated concepts such as 'scarcity of information' to be applied to a device that was meant to open such 'bottle necks' shows how myopic those that control the information are.
Profit is their ONLY concern...
Any ' Internet user' that forgets the very reason the computer (sharing information) was created becomes chaff , chattel ... an insignificant observer / node...
Murdoch should have been put out to pasture due to antiquated bias long ago ; now he may have done that through his own actions and the inaction of his advisors.
Like any fight for survival; say a 'dog fight'. Who brings a (antiquated idea) glider from 1901 to a contemporary '09 dog fight ; other than a fool?
Deep pockets do not make one immune from dumb ideas.
Sharing ,instead of scarcity not only helped create the Internet but is the basis companies survive; don't think so take a close look at the INTERNET.
Other than upsetting many people , this also highlights how ONE MAN controls information.

I only google news when I need to research stuff for an assignment. So this will make it harder for me to get my info. I will now be using Google LESS and will not be buying any more Google stuff in protest.

krazykizza:
Did you read the whole article? It says:
"Our users shouldn't notice any difference. Google News will keep helping people discover the news they're looking for, different perspectives from across the world and new sources of information they might not otherwise have found.
While this means even more control for publishers, the effect of opting out of News is the same as it's always been. It means that content won't be in Google News or in the parts of Google that are powered by the News index. For example, if a publisher opts out of Google News, but stays in Web Search, their content will still show up as natural web search results, but they won't appear in the block of news results that sometimes shows up in Web Search, called Universal search, since those come from the Google News index."
I think that what they're trying to say is that users of Google, that is users with a gmail account who are logged into that account, will not likely have access to certain publishers articles. So, you can't see it on Google News? Log out and do a search. Still not seeing Faux News articles? You are saved. :)
