Apple really does not "abuse"open source for their own benefit.
They don't hide it in their OS, not reveal it is there - and then call FOSS "communism" or "cancer", like some bigger companies have. Apple adheres to the software licenses of the open source software they use.
There was one company caught at least 2-3 times last year violating software copyrights and licenses last year, but it was not Apple - though it might have been a company that really is a monopoly.
There is no way in heck Apple is a monopoly; 5-10% market share, c'mon, you even know what the word monopoly means?
Apple republished FreeBSD (1993) with their improvements included as Darwin. They do the same thing with the GNU GCC compiler and other software development tools Richard Stallman wrote and promotes through his FSF non-profit organization.
Stallman got his GPL to be an approved open source license. Apple got their open source license approved too. http://www.opensource.org/licenses/apsl-2.0.php
Apple massively improved the Konqueror web browser's guts an made a reusable component out of it: WebKit. What do you know? Apple open sourced it and it is the guts of the Google Chrome desktop web browser that everyone raves about, and Google liked it so much they include it in their Google/Droid phones now too.

http://www.freebsd.org/
http://webkit.org/
http://www.konqueror.org/If Apple had not invested in these technologies, would they be incredibly well known and commonplace today? Probably not.
Linux (1991) is based on the principles, interfaces, and architecture of UNIX. A lot of free software that was originally written by students, professors, hobbyists, universities, non-profits, and commercial corporations was original put in UNIX. Later, it got included with Linux, which by the way, sometimes Richard Stallman is not too crazy about either.
Those other programs are included with FreeBSD too, which was written at UCB. Like UNIX, FreeBSD is compatible with UNIX but it is not a copy of it. If Linux is okay, then FreeBSD is too. In fact, a lot more of what became modern day UNIX was probably developed at University of California than in Finland.
Did Linux create all of this other software? Heck, no. Much of it was invented and written before Linus went to college, let alone started to develop LInux. Linux started off as an improved version of Minux, which was written by one of Linus's university professors.
Apple actually pays the salary of one of the major developers of FreeBSD, and one of the major developers of KDE Konquorer.
The truth is free too. Why not use it?

I have both apple (mac book), and window systems. He has a point about proprietery philosophies being a hinderance, but why expect all makers to embrace open source? It is a free internet. If they make a profit on their marketing methods, that must be a vindication of what they are marketing

Some good points IF you're an open source enthusiast. Of course there are inherent tradeoffs between using a commercial OS versus a free one, but I hardly think its realstic to expect either Apple or Microsoft to begin simply giving their OS away. They develop a user-friendly interface for profit, and people who consider it worthwhile buy it. Those of you who are willing to accept a bit harder-to-use OS for no payment have Linux.
I will defend Apple's interface, which I think is highly elegant and far less buggy (and less prone to third-party malware) than Windows. Macs are still very customizable, generally through the use of third-party control panels. I'll admit Mac Classic was more customizable than OS X, but the former was also incredibly unstable, especially when one used third-party OS tweaks. Now if one want to exploit the full power of the underlying OS in Mac, that's simply a matter of learning UNIX and tweaking the UNIX system underlying the OS X shell. Something that an average user wouldn't want to do, but really, no more difficult than what a power Linux user would do with their system.

you can put windows on you mac which runs faster and more stable. Therefore, you can put linux on it and anything else you would possibly need to help you make millions with your super computer you keep complaining about not having.

crashbangnoises:
One can put Linux directly on a Mac using some of the same software (VMWare Fusion or Parallels) that one would use to have access to Windows on one's OS X desktop.

Apple includes a "Boot Camp" feature with Macs that enables you to install a "retail" (non-OEM) copy of Windows. Last year, Apple said it was still working on its Windows 7 support on Macs. Apple is still saying that, despite saying they would have the it done by the end of 2009. http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ Not sure what to make of that, but if I was planning to run Windows 7 on a Mac right away, I would press them for an explanation of what is coming that is not here yet - and what works or does not work in the meantime.
