U.S. filmmaker Dan Woolley was shooting a documentary about the impact of poverty in Haiti when the earthquake struck. He could have died, but he ultimately survived with the help of an iPhone first-aid app that taught him to treat his wounds.

    • i'm not understanding how so far I'm the first skeptic.. Of all the radicals for abolishing the federal reserve and for all the hardcore conservatives saying the government is taking over the running of banks and healthcare, I was sure I'd run into a skeptic saying that "duh, the guy who ran into the tragedy already knew how to tie a bandage around main arteries". i mean really, how hard is it to know that before going in? how many movies, t.v. shows, or news articles does it take to know where to tie a bandage to stop bleeding? do you think he really was bleeding hardcore to a life threatening degree and decided to check his iphone for where to stop the bleeding? for a person to willingly step into that violent and chaotic situation, do you think there was no prep work?

i think this whole story is bullshit and am not sure why i'm standing alone. i have an iphone as well, but seriously, the sequence of events in the story don't sound like the iphone saved his day. i'll let credit go where it's due. in this story, i don't think it was the iphone.

    • If you need a mobile application to teach you how to stop a bleed or diagnose a broken foot, you deserve to die. There I said it.

    • Yea you know, it would be way less useful to just KNOW how to treat your wounds as opposed to having a device that miraculously didn't get destroyed.

Still cool that he did that though and had the strength to stay alive.
But 65 hours on an iPhone is like 41 minutes of Super Nintendo.

    • Awaiting his fate
Woolley is nearsighted and lost his glasses in the quake. But by using the focusing light on his camera and taking pictures, he was able to figure out where he was and where to go. And thanks to the iPhone first-aid app he’d downloaded, he knew how to fashion a bandage and tourniquet for his leg and to stop the bleeding from his head wound. The app also warned him not to fall asleep if he felt he was going into shock, so he set his cell phone’s alarm clock to go off every 20 minutes.

And then for 65 hours, he waited for whatever fate had in store for him.

The app used in question was Pocket First Aid and CPR.

as for power some how he had it my bet wall was hot

    • Did he use it to tell someone he was alive and where he was located? How did his friend David fair in the quake?
That's cool he was able to hold onto it or had in his pocket. Doesn't mean we need to supply one to everyone in the world.

Well, I'd imagine that with all the cell phone towers knocked down the iphone wasn't using any power to stay connected to a network, plus he could lower the light and turn off the volume. He could probably pull about a day's worth of power that way, plus, there's sleeping and such, so I could see him being able to access his phone for a few days without charging it, especially if he turned it off when it wasn't in use.

    • What DOESN'T the IPhone have an app for? Pretty cool that he was able to do that! If I even had enough money to afford an Iphone I would make sure to look through apps, because apparently there's more then just Dice Roll & AutoTune on those things! Thanks Apple for managing to actually put a few useful things other then a phone on the IPhone !
