Saudi girl gets 90 lashes for bringing cell phone to school

A 13-year-old Saudi schoolgirl is to be given 90 lashes in front of her classmates after she was caught with a mobile camera phone.
The girl, who has not been named, was also sentenced to two months in jail by a court in the eastern city of Jubail.
She had assaulted her headmistress after being caught with the gadget which is banned in girl schools, said Al-Watan, a Saudi newspaper. The kingdom's use of such punishments has been widely condemned by human rights organisations.
Three years ago 16 schoolchildren, aged between 12 and 18, were each sentenced to between 300 and 500 lashes for being aggressive to a teacher.

It's a freaking cell phone. what was she going to do picture everyone to death, assuming it's one of those Camera cell phones.
This is a clear case of where the punishment does not match the crime.

This punishment could kill her! Can anyone with total conviction say that this child should die for bringing her cell phone to school? We are also getting very little facts about the situation. Every report is the same. What did the administrator say or do before she was assaulted by the child? What would bring a 13 year old girl, living under Sharia law, to physically hit any authority?

This punishment/consequence can kill her and I don't think that it is a logical, or natural consequence to her actions. However, I'm not convinced we are getting all the facts of the story. She's a 13 year old child living under strict law...does anyone honestly think she'd assault a school administrator for getting her cell phone taken away? I work with kids her age and I doubt it. We are only getting a very small glimpse of what happened here.
In answer to your post Rolffz...I agree that we should discipline our kids, but can you really say that she should potentially die for bringing a cell phone to school just because she didn't follow the rules?

umm... if u give ur kid everything he/she wants then he/she wont be a brat thx very much and 90 whips seriously i would give hur atleast 10 because they can kill hur and hur parents can sew them for killing hur. so how would u feel if thatwas ur child? huh? so yah and if u wanna run ur mouth about it then go ahead so if u wanna be a brat then go where she is and do what she did or do sumthing tat ur not suppose to do and then c how she feels. ohh yah and dont forget shes yunger so yah go ahead and run your mouth. i think it a wrong thing to do atleast give her 10 lashes and then give her a warning so yah. and i think tat kids should be able to bring their cell phones to skool. what if its an emergancy and u need to tell them because i am a kid i am 12 and yah i do care so thx very much. >:(

In response to those of you that commented about how wrong we are in America let me say this...we are not subject to "shariah" and our country is not enslaved by a radical view of religion. We have many views and we all have a voice. We are as free as we allow ourselves to be. Yes America has problems but this isn't a discussion of "those who live in glass houses". There is wrong everywhere there is people and we are not exempt. Anyone who does wrong doing should be held accountable.
This punishment is harsh and unjust reguardless of her "attack". She is 13 and is surely incapable of fully understanding the results of her actions being at the maturity level the average 13 year old is.
To the man who agrees with the punishment talking about how people do not respect the law like they should, you're guilty of something but you will almost certainly never get a lashing for anything.
I cannot personally defend Islam, I do not see the peace in it and believe it is something ugly. Everyone that says "this is not islam" every time a story is posted about radicals, extremists or shariah law how do you constantly defend a religion who's practioners justify their actions with their faith? A religion which looks the other way for a murderer because he killed a infedel? For everyone who says "this is not islam" you are wrong and you don't want to believe it. Read a newspaper and see what is being done in the name of islam. It is what it is.
If our greed doesn't destroy us our religions will.

what kind of logic is that? she did something bad but she shouldn't be punished as bad?
in most states its illegal to text and drive and to talk on the cell while driving...both of these are serious road hazards, yet how many people still do it? a ton because they think its a joke. so how can the law be taken seriously? only through serious consequences.
so when the school says no cell phones, then keep them at home!. hell most students in the US still do this, bring electronics to school when they are supposed to be kept off campus, too bad our schools can't teach them such a good lesson as 90 lashings.

america needs to stop coddling their children. I am really surprised that the desensitizing of our nation has not allowed people to believe in this form of punishment. especially since even if it would kill them, they'd still have a few more lives left before the game was over. kill kill kill! go for the high score! (you weak spineless wimps!) I'm not a believer in big time gov't control and heavy laws, but if there are restrictions that someone puts down before hand in anything, I at least respect them whether I agree with them or not. wake up america. you're getting owned by so much and so many and you're going along with it like lemmings over the cliff and into the ocean below. it's not coming from the muslims, the chinese or the russians, it's coming from within your own country you blind fools! welcome to the real new world order. like it or not its happening now, a generation at a time, right before your very eyes. you are the ones that can generate change and resistance, but you choose to sit on your hands and hide behind your computer and tv and take the spoon fed crap you are told is the truth. i'll repeat...wake up america!

Gas up ypur SUV and Gas guzzling car so the United States can continue to buy oil from a tyrannical government, the house of Saud. If people really cared they would act, not talk. Cut your gas consumption, its time to stop supporting countries who have oil who are dictatorships, who would resort to flogging as punishment for any small act of defiance.
Through our consumption of oil we support the very acts we decry, a dichotomy that can no longer be ignored. - 2 years ago

The only way to truly resolve the concept of god inside of one's self is to realize that the idea in the 1st place is not vital to one's life or happiness.
While atheism is not a religion,it is a pointless belief system.Ultimately it based upon theory and therefore cannot be verified. The ultimate way to promote a healthy human future is to drop the argument and to simply acknowledge another person's belief just as that...a belief that needs no opposing view.We are all free to believe and think whatever we want.
The only way for atheist to succeed is to drop their label as atheist, and prove to mankind by way of action that we are our only authority and Thee ultimate decision maker of our fate as human beings.
Compassion and understanding of one another's belief is vital to our emergence into a new world.

Yes terrible how bad they are in Saudi. What are you covering up today in the US news about congressmen that you need this story today to tell us how bad somebody else is in their country?
Things are pretty bad in this country. Like little kids getting handcuffed and taken to police stations for misbehaving in public schools in the south? This is pretty shocking to me.
3M Americans in jail, most for non-violent offenses because of lack of economic opportunity in communities where the "laissez-faire" capitalists can't find anything profitable to invest in.
More profitable that is than continuous unacknowledged crypto- kepto- covert Keynesian military spending redistribution from the bottom to the top that made four new rich counties in the State of Virginia during the last 30 years post-Reagan and his "downsizing" government project. And people in those Northern Virginia counties don't think they should pay a tax increase?
Sorry, I agree that the US oil companies profiting from Medieval Monarchies who have violated human righs since the Brits had the empire before we did, their decades of Petro-$$$ paid to orthodox Wahhabist maddrasses to train arch conservatives who become terrorists, and the CIA working hard to make sure they stay in power are really really bad for us to have been implicated in.
But, with these emotional stories taken totally out of context you are diverting American voters your silly news entertainment cable channel from issues at home that are far worse for our lives and futures. I know you're trying to make us feel better about our situations with stories of how bad it is somewhere else, but that kind of media practice is called Demagoguery 101!

You obviously don't even understand laissez-faire or market economy principles....as if the government can stop profiteering anyways....all they can do is push it underground....
You blame freedom for statism, what cluelessness!
STATISM is the enemy, it backs the government backed corporatist state and continues its discrimination policies that divide us on many levels. It doesn't seem that the lashes were for the cell phone, but for the assault on the teacher. The question remains, what exactly was the nature of her assault on the teacher and was it completely unjustified? Law is relative and can never be fixed to a universal constant. Laws that humans make and follow are not like natural laws of nature; for example gravity or electromagnetism. Human laws are man made; whether they be secular or ecclesiastical. Even morality is relative.
I have studied anthropology, sociology, and political science and I did get a gestalt. It was an AHA! moment that I will never forget. I wrote my very own manifesto and it felt great.
What is a manifesto, you may ask?
A manifesto is a statement of personal truth. The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution together form a manifesto, but it is one ascribed to an artificial entity, rather than to a flesh and blood person. However, I wrote mine subject to change based on new information and data accumulated and analyzed.
The AHA! moment was the sudden realization that "I am free", truly free. I am the only one that can put me in chains, mental prisons, my consciousness in a box. Fear is both a motivation and a burden, but ultimately fear is what allows us to be coerced into chains, mental prisons and boxes for our consciousness. Why do you think that breaking a law always comes with a punishment? Because fear of the punishment should be the inducement to the people not to commit the crime.
Confronting fear through a process I undertook, I ultimately realized that I was not subject to any law but my own and I could choose which man made laws to honor and which laws to reject. I found my freedom when I overcame fear.
Justice is not found at the end of a sword or at the end of a whip or in the noose of a rope or bullet in a gun or an IV and syringe or an electric shock. Justice is found when we are raised aware and without fear. Justice is anarchy without corruption, everyone is respected and esteemed. No one is hungry, homeless, uneducated, exploited, or harassed. Human rights are considered sovereign within each individual person. Everyone is free to be who they want to be and live how they want to live, respectful of universal human rights.

This is NOT sick. If there were rules laid down then why didn't she (or her parents) make sure they were followed. Perhaps we need to not be so soft on our children and teach them about rules. Why do you think so many kids are the way they are today? It's because no one has disciplined them or taught them right from wrong. Kids disrespecting their parents and other 'authorities'.
