Has the previously 'unhackable' PS3 been hacked?

George Hotz said the hack took him five weeks to figure it out. He says he's planning on sharing the details online soon, when he's ironed out a couple of creases, and when he does, PS£ users could be able to run pirated games and homemade software.
Weirdly, figuring out the hack seems to have caused Hotz to take to speaking like a comic book evil villain.
"It's supposed to be unhackable - but nothing is unhackable," Mr Hotz told BBC News.
"I can now do whatever I want with the system. It's like I've got an awesome new power - I'm just not sure how to wield it."

I have two questions for him: Does that make him the supreme hacker of the world & Does he still putt his pants on one leg at a time? I shouldn't have t getting answers.
My upping this story is so very marginal even in the computer hacker mileau. - 2 years ago

When I first heard the news, I was surprised that it was the same guy that hacked the iPhone.

we'll have to wait and see if this "hack" actually leads to pirated PS3 games...i'm sure the size of the blu-ray games will make bootlegs expensive and time consuming

Some duct tape and bondo will make it look as good as new. I don't play video games but I am happy for you folks that do anytime some one sticks it to the Man I'm happy.

serious? just imagine that the parts you see are the most important and if you need the fancy plastic outside you better start thinking about what you like about your ps3....is it more a hq gaming device or a fancy "everybody has it - me 2" thing...

Personally I have an Xbox, I couldn't afford a PS3. You could say the same thing about a sports car or an iphone though. The finished aesthetic is what gives these products their edge.

Well, no one could...
Like the story claims, no one else could find a way to hack into the PS3, which I never even knew until this story came along.
Way to go, hacker! Proving everyone wrong on their opinions... :P

OK, let me explain 'hacking' consoles.
But before that, understand 'hacking' is different than 'cracking'. Hacking is modifying hardware or software. Cracking is illegally bypassing programing security.
That said, there is a community of people who modify consoles to be able to play copied games, games from other systems, and homemade games.
A lot of people in the modding community look down on people who use copied games. The coolest thing about modded consoles are all the homemade games that people make. There are a lot of homemade or homebrew games for Wii, DS, and PSP.
Hacking consoles is awesome because you are expanding on what the creators intended. The video game industry does not want people playing homemade games because they can't profit off of it. Why should gamers let corporate greed dictate what type of games they can play with the system they payed for. Homebrew games can be much more creative and experimental than any corporate brand game, because they're free.
Also, you cannot get any viruses from 'hacking' or modding a console. Although if you don't know what you're doing, you can kill your system.
