"So, gonna give you a little overview. It's very thin -- you can change the homescreen to whatever you want. What this device does is extraordinary. You can browse the web with it. It's the best web experience you've ever had."

    • There are a lot of slate tablets out there and even more coming along, there's nothing in the look of this or the hardware that sets it out from the pack; even more- this is one of the less able netbook style slates that's not even as powerful as a cheap netbook.
T There are only two things that will make this swim: 1. Good apps 2. And the continued support of Apple. With those it may become something more decent than the slow-of-the-mark me-too product that it is now.

    • This is basically a glorified iPod. I mean seriously: no flash? no USB? no HDMI? and only 64GB at most? This isn't a tablet, it isn't even a netbook! I was really expecting a fully revolutionized computing machine that would rival or even surpass the MacBook Pros and redefine the limits of computing technology. Talk about a letdown... 'disappointing' is an understatement.

    • The innovation came in the new apps, not the iPad itself. I was expecting a lot more but I guess that if apple made an app version of iWork other developers can really make a change in the way we operate computers. However, if steve doesn't allow Flash (videos only, how plays flash crappy games and wants interactive ads?) and multitasking the iPad might become a big NO

    • I was very excited when first hearing about the Ipad coming out but now im not sure anymore....

Please read this you might be buying some thing you might not need:

      http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/apples_ifail_tabletus_interruptus_20100127

Steve Jobs calls his new tablet “a magical device at a breakthrough price,” but chances are you don’t need one and can’t afford it anyway.

It’s basically a giant iPhone that goes for $729. It costs more if you want more storage, less if you can do without mobile broadband and don’t need as much room for videos, music and so forth. With six models to choose from—16-, 32- and 64-gigabyte flavors, each with or without a 3G radio—prices range from $499 to $829.

That’s about two to three times as expensive as most netbooks, those inexpensive miniature laptops that Steve Jobs treated with such derision at the beginning of his iPad presentation. Of course Apple hates netbooks—there’s no way to charge an outrageous premium on a zero-margin product. But customers love them. Netbook sales shot up 103 percent in 2009, and Apple wants in on that bigger-than-a-smartphone-smaller-than-a-… honey. Hence the iPad.

    • I do a lot of digital painting and art and I see this device more as a tablet computer. As long as it's still a pressure sensitive pad, then it should be all good. I could see doing sketches on it... and the price is decent. It would be great if there were a stylus you could order aftermarket... it has enough speed to run Photoshop.

I'm still going to wait until we have OLED screens that can fold up, though. :D

    • From a business standpoint Apple is going to do very well. They know how to sell and have a mass following of blind, uninformed consumers (not everyone of course, but a vast majority). I can see the potential in the iPad because of the exclusive app development and its video game capabilities, but I somehow feel that it is not enough. No flash support? Really apple?

However, I'm interested in seeing what the hp slate can do.

Maybe HP can do better than Apple? Maybe apple will finally have some serious competition in "innovation."

    • If you haven't even used the Apple I-pad which it would be impossible to do since it hasn't been released to the public then why waste your time talking crap about it and putting it down. I mean if you are going to complain about it not having enough contents or the name or even the price then stop complaining and don't buy it, it's that simple. That way for all of Apple lovers out there that want to have it can enjoy it. Who are we to judge so they came up with something new they are proud of themselves as well as they should be they are geniuses and I have to tell you I watched the video introducing this and I was pretty impressed but who am I or any of you that had nothing but negative things to say. If the negative ones out there don't have anything nice to say then SHUT UP and move on. I for one will go and check this out at the store before I chose to purchase it. This is for all the big mouths out there that don't have anything else to do move on if you are not impressed but who are you I am sure they are know that everyone has their own opinion. I was skeptical about the ipod touch but since I have owned one I love it. So, give it a chance lets wait until it comes out and see what happens how well will it sell I personally think it is going to be a big sell but I am just one person. I pray that this is successful and I send them prayers for bringing us such an interesting and new state of the art technology.

Because it can't access Youtube. Because it has no camera or microphone. Because the keyboard is unresponsive. Because it's confusing to use. They have videos of people who were trained to use it who were confused when using it. $500 for a machine even people trained to use it can't use. As I said earlier, they should stick to phones. They can't screw them up. Probably.

One thing. If we all shut up about things we didn't like, we'd be under a fascist dicatorship. O wait im sorry we kinda are. but anyways thats besides the point.

The premonition behind advocating the death of this product and the company is in no way selfish. They conned you into thinking its revolutionary technology, but it's just a bigger ipod. We must be intelligent consumers. Our purchasing power determines the outcome of our technology and progress.

The ipod was decently revolutionary, with a streamlined interface and a touch screen. It was small, handy and fun. However, the ipad is just another gimmick, like the new generations of ipods with their ancient hard drives. WE can fit a terabyte of information within a flash drive that's perhaps the size of a nail on your pinky. AND THEY STILL STICK TO 4g? 8g? 16g? and max is what 250g? BULL SHIT. RIPPING YOUR FACE OFF AND PISSING ON IT. DO YOU NOT REALIZE THAT MOORES LAW IS WAY PAST THE SHIT apple is releasing at the dawn of this decade?!

ps. what the hell can you do with a 16gig ipad? download 16 low rez movies or 4 dvds? I thought this was a proper seemingly full priced comp. BAHAHAHAHA sad kids man.

    • It's amazing how far our technological expectations as a society have come.

This thing is essentially as thin and lightweight as a pad of paper, and it provides someone full-screen access to the single most massive library of knowledge, media, information, art, and communication in the history of mankind, not to mention providing—at minimum—the storage space equivalent of nearly half-a-million individual sheets of paper.

Back in 2003, the iPod's interface was black and white and looked like Windows Notepad.

Now, in 2010, people are unimpressed by the ability to watch videos, play music, e-mail friends, surf the Web, play games, read books, and view a detailed map of the entire planet Earth on a tablet the size of a cookbook.

      Jesus Christ, people.

    • I guarantee this thing is going to fail. I'm a big fan of my iPhone, but I can smell the shitstorm coming already. Pretty much any modern e-notebook is superior to this in EVERY category and is almost 200 bucks cheaper. You can use the $200 to go buy a 3G card for your notebook instead.

    • If this doesn't fail so hard.. don't buy the iPad. Let's wait for a better company to make one with more features, formats and compatibilities. F**k Apple and it's restrictive designs.

I wonder how many people will buy this just 'cus they own and iPhone/iPod. These will be perfect for thieves, big, shiny and worth a lot. No more hiding it in your pocket and changing the headphones from white to black/etc..

Anyone wanting to buy an IPhone still. Stop right there. Buy a touchscreen by HTC. They look just as good and have Android, open source, upgradable, free apps, flash support, better than iPhone, a web browser and way more!

It's too big to be useful in all the situations that the iPhone is useful in, and too small and non computer like to get work done like you would on a macbook.

I love the iphone, its worked great for me, I just cant see how this device would fill any real need in anyones life.

    • If I want to watch a movie, I put a DVD in my DVD player. If I want to read a book, I actually buy one. You know, that thing with the pages and print? If I want to talk on the phone, I pick up my phone. If I need to think, I use my brain. This does nothing to advance technology from where we are now except to just make it more "convenient." Exalting laziness is not progress.

Sorry, but how is using more stuff superior to using one thing with all that stuff built into it? Many people are frequently on the move and find it unfeasible to carry around a bunch of books with them, let alone a DVD player. And do I really even need to explain the impracticality of having to rely on a landline phone?

Yes, if you spend all your time at home in your room, this is completely useless; but I personally spend almost my entire day away from my apartment, and although I wont be buying this, I certainly can appreciate its usefulness.

    • This gadget will help transform the world and carry us into the future. How? Watch the video! The size and weight of one will make it easily portable, which you can do with an iphone or ipod touch, but the large screen makes web browsing, book reading, movie watching, not such a strain to do, plus you can share what it is that you're viewing with those around you, without having to crowd over one another. The ability to create applications is the piece that allows me to say with conviction "this gadget will help transform the world and carry us int the future." Imagine having the ability to sync a device with every gadget in your life! Examples: the security system to your house, locking and unlocking the doors; gauge the temperatures, evaluate the efficiency of the energy use, controlling the lighting; sync to your entertainment systems, like the "television" and speakers.

Cars that are built with the intelligent computer systems and wifi access could communicate with you through your ipad; notifying you when service and repairs would needed, with specific parts and pieces detailed in the notification. Life would lose much of its hassle. And you will feel pretty peachy when you sync your music to the cars speakers, as we already do now.

Now I must acknowledge the fact that many of the suggestions I made for using the this ipad already exist in one way or another, through some other device or application. My focus is on the brilliance of having one device that is universal in use.

Ive noticed some negative comments here, but havent bothered to read too many of them, because it seems a good portion of those people are not really exerting much effort in the cranium area. A person may see this as useless, or being the same as the ipod, but ive already mentioned how that is not entirely so. They might not being thinking about the potential this has. Besides this device becoming synced with other pieces of technology and being universal in use, there is the service it will have on education and eliminating the need to cut so many trees.

When every college book becomes available for computers and the ipad, the education system wont have to continue aiding many of the lobbying industries that have negatively held everyone back from real progress. The lumber industry will lose much of its income. This giving lee way to consider the decriminalization of marijuana, for medical uses and so much more.

The future is now. Can you feel it?

    • From what I've seen it looks like something I want but I wouldn't buy. It looks nice enough but I don't need it. If I'm in front of the TV, i'm on my laptop. If I'm on the move, I'm on my iPhone and if I want to read books, I buy a book.

    • As i expected, apple made more useless shit. This oompany shows it's true colours. It's main priority is to launder money from the public. They have no interest in pushing the boundaries of their technology. They have nestled themselves in a perfect demographic that could care less about getting more bytes for their money. This is a major step backwards and I hope the masses can come to terms with that.

Not only does this piece of shit cost more then a normal laptop. It has less functionality then one. It isn't even ergonomic. I hope apple dissolves after this ponzi scheme, they are just taking money from companys who actually contribute new technology.

My netbook can do any of the things an Iphone or the ipad can do for free! AND it was 200 less with bluetooth and wifi!

Apple are the best con artists of all time. Another product that does less for more money!

    • Apple's Jesus Tablet a False Prophet!

Come on, Apple... I was expecting something truly "revolutionary." This is just more of the same in a larger form factor. Boooo. No camera? iChatting with friends while strolling around the house has always been so hard to do with a laptop - it would have been IDEAL on the iPad. Lame.

But wait... it makes sense. Apple always does this. The NEXT version will surely have a camera and all those fanboy gearheads (myself included) will once again get "appled" when 6 months later a newer, faster, more full featured, and cheaper model is released.

My advice: if you absolutely can't resist the lure of a shiny new Apple thinga-ma-dodad, buy the entry level model at $499. Or the entry level with 3G if you really must take it with you to show off at coffee shops (you tool!). At least that way you won't have blown ALL your scratch when the newer, better one comes out.

Eff you, Steve and company. What a bunch of app-holes!

I can imagine someone sitting on a train and going use it then stepping off the train and getting it nicked. Surely if you have an iphone, ipod and/or a mac you will have no need for this thing as it doesn't seem to do anything new.
