How Much Did You Spend? Tell Me on Blippy.

sarahlane
Since when did it become acceptable to talk about all your personal financial details with your Internet friends? Since a service called Blippy made its way onto the social network scene, apparently. I have a feeling folks will have mixed feelings about this one, so watch my explainer video and let me what YOU think.

    • yes I think it would be a valuable source of information. If people would be honest about what they bought it could let people hit the bullseye when they work the numbers.

    • fascinating? yes, creepy? with out a doubt. In this day and age I feel like privacy is just being deleted one letter at a time. I might be a little jaded since I have no cash or job right now so my account would read..."best friend bought a couple drinks for me at the bar lucky 13" or "girlfriend brought me to see avatar at the grand lake theater"........Not exactly bragging. But hay I did do it in this comment....so who knows

    • This is completely fascinating to me. Thanks for the great commentary. Im not sure if I think of this as TMI, but more like a way to feel connected to people in a way that would once have been taboo. I don't need that much connection.

    • This has to be one of the weirdest things I have ever seen. It is like the Twitter of money.

I don't think I would want everyone seeing what I spend on anything...it just seems weird. I mean, if people think Twitter is bad, this certainly takes it to a whole different level. This just seems like a bad idea in more ways than one.

Forget to censor that scandalous thing you purchased...oh well, your friends on Blippy know now!

    • after watching how some web pages can access to your personal information without you even authorizing it, i guess this "blippy" doesn't sound that weird at all, at least you are in control of the information that you share

    • I will never ever talk about my personal business all out in the open like this.
this is outright stupid. asking for problems later on if you start doing this.

    • Why does it show up when you spend $0?

Surely we could be here all day with that? Today, for example, I didn't buy flights to Dubai, I passed on purchasing an army of pigmy horses and I refrained from spending anything on antique artworks.

    • I find Blippy fascinating for all the pro/con reasons you're all expressing. It's very polarizing! .... still not ready to share my bank card data, sorry ;)

    • Not I, said the fly. I prefer my privacy to the extent that I am still able to enjoy it and I could not be less interested in the spending habits of others. Do not help Big Brother. He is doing fine without the aid and comfort of sites like this.

    • I still don't see the point. The only thing i could imagine happening is a situation where i would get pissed after seeing a contact buying a tv for much cheaper than i paid. That's it though. Pointless.

    • Sounds incredibly creepy, I don't enjoy telling my friends what I spend on things (good or bad) so that information being available to the masses has no appeal. Also I think this falls into the "who cares" realm occupied by several social networking services.

    • ... a hacker under the alias "Neo" wishes to learn the answer to the question, "What is the Matrix?" Cryptic messages appearing on his computer monitor and encounters with three sinister agents lead him to a group led by the mysterious underground hacker Morpheus ...

    • I think the real benefit here is that once your spending habits are public, or at least, available for scrutiny by your friends, that it would help some people who have a difficult time making good money decisions.

When it is just you and your own secret shame, locked away on a website that only you know the password to, you act differently than if all your purchases have a potential to be mocked by peers.

Heck, it could even be good for your diet.

"Do I really want this $8 charge at Coldstone Creamery for this mondo sunday showing up for all to see... Better pay with cash. =)"

    • Seriously? I thought there was going to be like some kind of benefit to joining like helping your friends stay on budget or comparing prices to make sure you're not overpaying for something. That would be useful. But just blattering on about what you spend money on is just ridiculous. Now corporations can just use the data for whatever evil purposes they want to. I don't know why but something about this makes me angry.

    • their will be some great information coming from this site after it has accumulated enough data. it may cause the market to be more competitive and keep mechanics from ripping off girls.

    • I think the big question is: How much do you earn Sarah? Spending $0 on iTunes every so often hardly shares any of your info! Unless it was someone who I was really interested in stalking, this thing is very boring.

    • So sex for drugs,...no cash changes hands transactions,...don't blip well?
Seems to me the most interested party for blippin would be the IRS,...lookin for the bloopers. Otherwise,...........yawn,....what is it ,..."Expenditure porn"?

------But just think of the entertaining trail you could leave,....8000 rounds of ammo,....I sex doll,...3 valentines day heart candles,....1 case of cheap scotch,....3000 Hallmark cards,....

What do you take before commenting or posting a story. I'm not trying to demonize you, I honestly want to know so that I can be on the same wavelength as you when I read your stuff.

    • Weird, creepy, and like CalgarC mentioned, the IRS will love peeking at this. Or your boss, or your spouse, or your parents, or your kids . . .
