Japanese scientists create elastic water

Elastic Water could eventually replace plastic, or be used in an environmentally-safe plastic.

Bernama, a part of the Malaysian National News Agency, reports that Japanese scientists have created “elastic water." Developed at the Tokyo University, the new material consists mostly of water--95-percent--with an added two grams of clay and organic material. The resulting substance resembles jelly, but is extremely elastic and transparent.

The invention was originally revealed last week in the latest issue of the Nature scientific magazine. According to the article, the new material is quite safe for the environment and humans, and may be a “long-term” tool in medical technology, possibly to help wounded or surgically cut tissue to remain closed.

Bernama also reports that--by increasing its density--the new material could be used to produce "ecologically plastic materials," or could replace plastic altogether. This aspect is still under investigation until September 2010. However, if successful, the scientists may have found a way to make the world a little greener.

Indeed, Americans on both the Left and the Right have plenty of misconceptions about other developed countries. To give another example, some "socialist" European countries actually have even fewer banking and finance regulations than the U.S. does.

    • academically speaking Japan's just very enthused when it comes to education. It did wonders for them as a country after war and it's been the sole symbol of status amongst many families there. In the US status comes by way of what you own, but in Japan it comes by way of what you have achieved in any endeavor. So obviously they seek to advance in technology it's just such a big deal to them to jump those hurdles.

It's a bit of a disapointment to be an american at times, the average person in this country goes to college because it's what you do. No direction, no passion for anything in particular. Just go to public school, get lessons from teachers that aren't inspired to teach they simply "keep up with the new lesson plan". After you do that for a few years go to college and enjoy your new found liberties, or join the armed forces / work force.

Then grow old and watch your children do it all over again....I don't think we're a very driven group of citizens here.......

    • TasteHi:

I don't want to make it seem like it's cool to be uneducated but what makes you think becoming a scientist is what's "right" for everyone? Maybe some people just want to have fun. Some people don't care if they're not super smart. Next time consider that before you make it seem like Americans lead sad, unfulfilling lives.

    • We should just use glass. The disposable economy is not sustainable, no matter how much water plastic you have. It's better spending that water washing the glass.

    • I admire the Asian populations for working hard toward a better tomorrow, this is impeccable news to have elastic water possibly being a plastic replacement!

    • Long story short, the US today sucks....and I say fuck this country. I'd prefer to get out of the US after college.

    • To bailey78. Were you referring to me, brother or sister? And it is "stoned" not "stone."
Haven't had that spirit since 1999. No time, ruins my aim. Lyrical, I think is my word for today and in that spirit, I leave you with this calypso tune from Cat's Cradle (Vonnegut, 1963)

On the end of the world: [ 119 ]

Someday, someday, this crazy world will have to end,
And our God will take things back that He to us did lend.
And if, on that sad day, you want to scold our God,
Why just go ahead and scold Him. He'll just smile and nod.

Pax vobescum, it is better not to see it coming.

    • The big plastic corporations will be making some huge unlimited political campaign contributions to make sure this never makes it to market.

    • I say, give a few chunks to the rats to nibble on first. No, not your local or national "elected" officials. The little furry beasts. No more BPAs? Time to sell off the plastics stocks? Was this stuff supposed to replace Viagra? I agree with crob80227, evil Japanese and their Socialized Medicine. Jesus was not Japanese and he sure as hell didn't believe in socialized medicine. Who needs that when you can preform miracle healings at the drop of a hat. No wait, there were not hats back then were there? Heck, Jesus wasn't an American either. He was a Jew. Any Jews in Japan? Were is my tequila? Am I Japanese? I once thought I was a reincarnated Japanese boy from Hiroshima circa August 6, 1945. But, my eyes are blue, like my Afghan relatives. I, like most of us, thought it was a recessive trait. Nope, DNA points to a mutation in Afghanistan about 8,000 years ago. Greetings to all my blue eyed mutant bothers and sisters.

    • See what happens when a country is mature and doesn't spend 23hrs a day ranting about how Obama was really born in Kenya and/or wasting 3 trillion dollars occupying Middle Eastern country?? They can BUILD shit!

I wonder what cool stuff we could build if we weren't spending every available penny on the military and "proving" Obama is a socialist???

If you were to drink enough elastic water, you would become like stretch armstrong. Your limbs would have a stretchy quality. It would be great. As soon as elastic water hits the market, drink up!

that's like cherry picking man. ok they have an edge in technology but in about everything else we kick ass their economy is about to fall and ours is still the biggest. they're not even expected to get better. People tend to bash america too easily.

Well if the Japanese don't like America they can GET OUT!

Oh wait... sorry that's my reflex Oklahoman response to anything that sounds like anti-American sentiment. It's also my reflex response to any opinion about the Iraq War, positive or negative.

One day we're all going to figure out they have a superorganism collective brain like insects or something and that's why they're so smart. And they'll be all nonchalant like "Oh you all don't have collective consciousness?..."

    • "However, if successful, the scientists may have found a way to make the world a little greener."

      This is debatable.

The one *good* thing about plastics, is that they use up oil in a way that doesn't release CO2 into the environment.

If a viable and cheaper alternative was found for making plastics that didn't involve oil, what would happen next is that the price of oil would fall, considerably. Cheaper oil leads to more oil use (e.g. a higher percentage of oil burned), and may actually set back alternative fuels and electric car research back, since those projects are largely driven by expensive oil.

So yes, this could make landfills have less plastic. But at the end of the day, big landfills don't really have the sort of serious impacts climate change does.

But it is worth noting that the evil Japanese with their SOCIALIZED MEDICINE came up with this technological breakthrough...and not the US.

    • crob80227:

We create many more things than japan. This one just gets published and you go crazy over it! How about anti cancer medicine? You know where that comes from? the U.S! so relax and realize that Japan barely makes any progress and anyway this has nothing to do with "SOCIALIZED MEDICINE". Japan is ahead in robots but that also doesn't have anything to do with medicine.

Haha! You're seriously suggesting that Japan is not as technologically advanced as the US? Dude, seriously, Japan kicks our ass on just about every technological level. We're busy inventing the latest boner pill and Japan is building maglev trains.

I'm talking about the "MEDICINE" you're talking about "dude" and in technology it's not the government doing it it's private companies. All I'm trying to say is that you comment was ridiculous and made no sense. Of course Japan is ahead in technology but in medicine we are (because you mentioned "SOCIALIZED MEDICINE" it's just annoying to see America bashing with no real proof or backing.
