Chrome Extensions: Killing Firefox Slowly

sarahlane
If you're a Windows user, Google Chrome beta 4.0 already supports extensions. But even Mac users can get in on the extension action by downloading a developer channel version of Chrome for OS X. I recently did a little extension hunting, and found a few I really like already. Watch out, Firefox!

Links I mention:

My favorite extensions so far:
Bit.ly
Chromed Bird
Send from Gmail
Google Mail Checker
Digg
MK UndoCloseTab

    • well, I think Opera's days are numbered. I'd hate to spend what little gray matter I have left on learning something that's riding towards the dust heap. Especially when that gray matter will be taking such a beating today (St. Patrick's and all) ;-)

    • Maaaan! This blows. I installed Chrome on the day it was released (windows version) and found it buggy and unstable. Tried it again yesterday (new computer) and guess what - buggy and unstable. Scripts keep hanging on various sites, a page or 2 won't load. What really sucks is, SL's right - the add-ons are better than Firefox (and the interface is cleaner -- I hate how FF puts some extensions on the bottom, some on the top, some float, whatever). Now I want Chrome but I know it's not worth it. I must now browse in discontent.

    • stumbleupon. Im not sure if its an extension, but stumble upon is now on chrome if your interested. Also Cooliris is a really cool way to browse the internet in a sleek coverflow-esque format. It is great, but really only if you have relatively fast internet. otherwise it is not worth it to wait for the snapshots. Also "beautify facebook" adds a really cool pop up look to facebook. and also adds a nice things to the new facebook layout, including the new search bar at the top. with the extension it can scroll with you and allways stay at the top. check them out!

    • When I was a PC user I really liked firefox, however when I switched to Mac Firefox was never anywhere as good as Safari. But Chrome for Mac is everything I wished Firefox was. The only thing I would like are more themes for the browser.

    • I love the fact that you can use most Greasemonkey scripts in native Chrome. I use the Facebook Fixer Greasemonkey script. Its nice to preview large pictures just by hovering over a thumbnail in FB. Some of my friends have a ton of pictures so you can also put them all on one page and not have to endlessly click 'next page'.
Evernote is a good one too. If you make a lot of phone calls, Google Voice is also a good plugin. Lets you dial right from a phone number on any website.

    • I'm a firefox user since last year and it is awesome, I love it, anyway if you like to customize your browser then firefox is for you. There is this add on called coolpicks (from the developers of cooliris) that is very similar to bit.ly but instead of showing you the URL of a link it shows you the web page itself in a pop up window, really nice

    • Google Voice extenstion is pretty awesome. And I love Xmarks. Stores your bookmarks and if you want, your passwords online so you can xfer them to other browsers else where.

    • I tried Chrome a long time ago, and the main reason for sticking with FF (other than extensions) is that the zoom functionality, which I use very often, works really well in FF, not so much in Chrome.

I don't know if they have improved it since then. Has anyone tried it lately?

I use it all the time. Works fine for me. But some of that sort of thing may depend on the set up of your computer itself. I would certainly check it out yourself!

    • You guys are happily climbing into your marble caskets, which are stored in a stone labyrinth, locked in a puzzle, hidden in the underground caverns of a lost city.
Don't forget the sweet songs of birds.

    • Chrome is still slower than Firefox on my computer. Shame it wasn't like that in the start. Too many users are experiencing slow web page loading compared to Firefox.

Bring FF and Chrome up together and loads a heavy website.. Which loads faster? Do a couple tests, then use that.

Firefox till Chrome works better. C'mon Google, iron those creases out.

    • Almost all these extensions and more come with firefox too. Google have to come out with something innovative to over come firefox's market share of more than 50%.
My chrome keeps crashing when ever i play more than 1 flash video. Its still unstable with so many bugs to be fixed. Hope chrome will somehow revolutionize browser in the near future. Keeping my fingers crossed till then but as of now firefox is my choice

    • I decided to use Google Chrome because I already use Google. I use Google Earth, Gmail, and taking the next step and just browsing with Chrome seemed like the natural thing to do. Not to mention it offers better protection than Internet Explorer.

Mozilla Firefox is also nice, but since I already use Google for many other things, I passed it up and went straight for Chrome. I love it, its sleek and cool.

I also like how it automatically opens a new tab for you when you hit a new link instead of using the same window all the time (or using many windows). It lets me keep track of more than one thing without having to backtrack.

    • I enjoy chrome and use it about 1/2 the time. Still prefer Opera a tad. I second the motion that everyone should play with it some. I really cant decide which browser is quicker.
p.s. I have never had ANY infections with Opera,....the euro-condom of the web.

    • Appreciate the video on the *gasp* firefox "alternative." But can we really compare a long loved open source browser like firefox that will do whatever I say, however arbitrary, paranoid, or cheesy it might be, with this newfangled contraption made by someone on the stock exchange. No ma'am, I'll walk out on the limb of the cherry tree cut down by G. Washington to say that you just traded in your LG that survived a rising tide at the beach, a luxurious stay in the bottom of a piss hole, an ex-lover's rage, an FBI seizure and search or a sleazy stay at that motel 6 where you obtained your first genital wart and a bad case of the scabies... (inhale) for an i-phone with a fart app.

Remember the bloody Google toolbar that has been trying to creep its way into your life for years now ? Well now we have a full blown browser to hate. Don't let this program into your life, or soon you will be a scared shell of a human being afraid to let your friends use your computer. Google has an agenda that firefox never will....so just don't do it.

    • Aww, even Sarah doesn't have any love for almighty Opera. I've been using Opera for years, the Widgets allow for what i think is a much greater functionality than extentions. All Geeks/Nerds/Smart people should at least give the latest version a look. I've tried all the other browsers but still come back to Opera, please give it a test drive! You might just thank me later.

    • Google - IS NOT what it is cracked up to be. It's promise is very much a fraud. It's made money and does some good things with their money, but their core is search and their search is entirely lacking.
Yahoo beats Google search flat. F-L-A-T!

They want to entrap you, just like microsoft wants to entrap you.

The Google song, so well-touted, is PR, - not substance.

Not substance. The search models they have do not do a good job - their search model has been compromised and over-ridden by people who want the traffic.

If you put it something, you get pages of products you weren't looking for.

Try Yahoo and compare. Then it will become instantly very obvious.

But Google will not change because they have become an engine to make money - rather than an engine to create communications.

They are failing at their prime activity.

Hey man... when it comes to searches, I don't really care about any of that and I don't think mny people do either. I already use Google all the time, using Google Chrome was just the next natural step for me.

    • UrbanGypsy:

You don't care about what you are searching for?
It is fine to get whatever you get - pages of ad-sites? Because, why? They are so interesting, or Google is your personal friend and warm fuzzy blanket that you don't want to look outside from?
Sometimes, joining up - is closing down.

Pretty much... Iike warm blankets. I don't like the other searches, I'm used to Google and I think its the same for many other people. I have no problem finding things with Google.
