Here is a part of a story I read on Greenwala:
Toyota has decided to recall an estimated 270,000 of its latest-generation Prius cars in Japan and the United States to fix a brake problem in the popular hybrid, a report said Friday.
The world's largest automaker would shortly file the request with Japan's transport ministry and the US Department of Transportation, The Nikkei newspaper reported.
A spokesman for Toyota's US unit told AFP that he could not confirm or deny the unsourced report and said he had "no information on it."

don't think that Japanese corporations can ever be out-maneuvered in their attempts to hide problems. they are just as slick as the rest of big business.
the gas pedal issue is nothing so new that the Detroit Free Press hasn't been following it since 2003.http://www.asq.org/qualitynews/qnt/execute/displaySetup?newsID=7980&WT.mc_id...

I give it six months to a year and most people (other than those who already didn't like Toyota) will have forgotten/stopped worrying about this. And not all of one type of car are built with the exact same parts in all countries. This is common among many car manufacturers, and not just a way to save money. In some cases the manufacturer may not exist in the country that an auto plant exists (I don't believe Denso produces anything in the US). The part manufacturer may stop producing the part (Honda's changing of brake providers for some car models, sometimes mid-year). Sometimes a part or component may not conform to the laws of all countries that the car is sold in (Lotus' usage of the Toyota Celica engine in it's USDM Elise/Exige instead of it's original Rover engine due to emissions). Toyota just got a little too big for it's britches going after GM, and just needs to re-evaluate and reinforce it's commitment to quality. You could also say that if there's any reason to not have interchangeable parts from model to model, this is it.

Unfortunately it looks like Toyota USA may go the way of GM in the future. The recent problems they've had are all due to some asshole CEO getting a bug up his ass to pinch pennies.
When this happens the first thing they think about doing, is substituting genuine parts for knock offs (cheaper, less genuine parts), or they find a cheaper supplier, that for some reason can't build the parts to engineered specs. If the parts are not built to engineered specs and they decide to use the parts anyway, what do you think the end result is? Does sticking gas pedal sound familiar? It also could be a computer malfunction.
This is incredibly stupid, because the damaged reputation from the recalls are going to cost them far more money than they ever thought they could have saved by using cheaper parts or parts not built to specs.
I've noticed how Toyota of Japan for the most part has been immune to these mechanical gas pedal defect debacles. This is mainly a USA problem, but now they're recalling cars in Japan too? I'm speechless.
And Toyota, let's stick to key ignition shall we? The push button ignition has proven to be convenient but not safe.

This is the sign of company with integrity. At HUGE expense to themselves they are saying "we screwed up and we will make it better". I am SO wanting a Toyota car right now.

It's kind of hard not to take responsibility after someone using your product is killed due to poor quality control of parts.

Toyota is getting hurt bad with this. Its sad because Toyota has been a quality brand for so long and ever since they became the number one auto maker in the world and their production grew, quality went down with it. Honda has been ranked number one in quality for a bit as well and even they had problems with recalls lately. I guess American auto companies can take advantage of this now, or the Germans and Koreans will haha!

Yeah I was thinking the same thing? According to the article it is affecting only the new 3rd generation Prius that were manufactured between May and December.
Wonder what is going on with the manufacturing process? I saw a TV report today that says that the actual fix is pretty simple.
