FBI Director Robert Mueller is pushing a law through congress that will force web sites to retain customer visit logs for two years. The idea has strong backing and is popular among state computer investigators.
The move is a clear extension of the 1986 law that required phone companies that offer toll services to retain call information for 18 months. It is also a sign of the growing presence of cyber security and online transactions.
FBI's chief of the digital evidence section, Greg Motta, has stated that the FBI will stay within its own investigative means.
While, the FBI has provided assurances, the idea is likely to be draw heat for infringing on internet privacy.
