The week in Technology: Google Buzz, Iran riots, Facebook redesign

Another week ends in the world of technology and it's with crushing disappointment that we note Britain's still without 3D TV, phones implanted in fingers and genuine X-Ray specs. Doing their bit to help turn frowns upside down, however, are Google who launched "Facebook killer" Buzz this week. Facebook, perhaps realising the benefits of disguise when a murderer is apparently after you, unleashed a new look and the iPad still sounds mostly rubbish. Read on for a round-up of Current.com's Technology stories from the past seven days:

Google Buzz launches

From the people who bought you Google Mail, Google Maps, Google Docs, Google Earth and, er, Google, comes Google Buzz. Billed as a Facebook/Twitter replacement, Buzz is Google's foray into social networking, something they've not been great at in the past. Buzz lets you share pictures, links and thoughts with friends and works in conjunction with your Gmail account contacts, something that's raised privacy concerns. It's fairly easy to fix though, as Current's Sarah Lane explained this week. Current's on both Twitter and Buzz, updating with the latest in the world of news, technology, entertainment, web videos and Current so be sure to follow us.

Iran's government - not Gmail fans

Mere days after Buzz launched, Iran's telecommunications agency announced plans to shut down Gmail access in the country. They avoided begrudgingly admitting it was because they actually preferred their arch-enemy Twitter and, in fact, those in the non-tech world claim it's something to do with hindering anti-government protests. Tsk, noobs.

Facebook tries a new look

No stranger to intelligent protest, thousands of Facebook's users have reacted with terror to Facebook's minor aesthetic changes. Though the tweaks are minor, and basically consist of moving a couple of buttons around and streamlining Facebook chat, that hasn't stopped the inevitable backlash. People are even inexplicably finding themselves unable to figure out how to log in.

iPad - not that exciting after all, it seems

The dust after Apple’s widely watched debut of the iPad has settled and it appears, frankly, lots of people don’t want one of these.
