Last week, North Carolina eBay user lace_thongs35 thought she was putting up an everyday, 80s-era Nintendo Entertainment System (together with five games) up on the popular auction site. But less than an hour after the first bid, the price was over $6,000 -- and on Wednesday, when the auction closed, the final selling price topped $13,000.
Why? Not the console itself, but one of the games bundled with it -- a deeply obscure 1987 release called Stadium Events, a highly sought-after collectors' item. But it wasn't even the game itself that was worth the bulk of the money -- it was the original cardboard box, which collectors value at a breathtaking $10,000. Fewer than 10 complete copies of the game are thought to exist, and retro gaming aficionados consider it one of the hardest-to-find NES games ever made.
Bet you're wishing you hadn't let Mom throw out your Nintendo collection now, eh?

on ebay, in the land of fake goods, you gotta think twice before bidding on that $2400 one of a kind 15 piece gucci luggage set with a BuyItNow price of 50bucks, and ask yourself 'is this real?' How funny would it be if some 80s nerd/borderline genius, full well knowing the box is worth more than the game, created a flawless knockoff of Stadium Events. Really...how hard would it be?? all it takes is a lil photoshopping, maybe some adobe illustrator, some authentic 80s cardboard (to bypass the carbon testing of course, lol) and a middle aged woman/patsy to put it up on ebay claiming it was her long lost sons. The guy that dropped 14k on that system should spend 300 on a flight out to north carolina to make sure that things legit before makin that Paypal transfer. Shit, the game could be fake too!! 8bit?? I know 7th grade tech classes that could design such a game!!

Yeah, that tittle is REALLY misleading since the price had nothing to do with the system.

I still have my old NES, SNES, and N64... Nothing beats dusting off the old console every long once in a while to relive the retro days :)

I don't care how rare it is, I would NEVER spend 13k on a BOX...
Especially when you could use that money for something charitable.

I was too young to have an NES, and my first game system was a Nintendo 64. I just think that is way too high of a bid for an NES.

By the looks of it 1 out of 5 people read the article.
The nintendo wasn't the valuable item, it was the box to a game believed to be 1 of 10 in existence. A cardboard box... a game came in... in 1986.

One of my earliest memories is shopping with my cousin. He had a choice to buy Stadium Events or Konami's Track and Field. He went with Track and Field, based on my suggestion that the box looked better.
I should probably call and apologize. haha.

ummm, did they collect money? ebay is a joke. it is VERY common for people to make fake bids to make worthless shit extremely expensive. unless there's proof of a financial transaction for this i'd say that the person selling is probably very disappointed right now.
