Washington Allows Internet Companies to Operate in Cuba

Washington will permit US internet companies to enter Cuba and expand their services to the island. Microsoft, Yahoo and a host of other companies were allowed to do business in the island.

The new policy is part of a new approach towards Cuba that favors opening up digital means of communication in order to open Cuban society to the world, similar to the way in which Iranians have used Facebook and Twitter to connect with the outside world.

The internet in Cuba is severely restricted by the state and Cuba ranks second to last in the world, only above North Korea, in freedom of the press, and Reporters Without Borders ranks Cuba among one of 13 countries in which the internet is most restricted by the government: http://www.rsf.org/List-of-the-13-Internet-enemies.html

Absolutely, and there are even some who argue that however well meaning, this won't really do any good. There are far too many restrictions on the internet in Cuba for this to mean anything.

But Washington taking these steps makes sure that the only obstacles the Cuban people face come from the Cuban regime and not the United States. This is very similar to the approach being taken towards Iran.
