Chatroulette Map: putting a location to a face or... you know

If you've spent more than a couple of minutes on chatroulette, chances are you'll have seen a lot of bored faces, the best of the internet's eccentrics and way too many weird blokes making sweet love to themselves. Thankfully, a new site might mean a reduction in the latter.

Because the computers of Chatroulette participants are connected directly, it's possible to identify the IP address of another participant. A new site called Chatroulette Map is taking advantage of this to build a geolocated database of Chatroulette participants. Chatroulette Map plots its data on a Google Map, and for each participant, a photo and the actual IP address of the participant are displayed.

The other side of the coin to this is it allows you to see if any neighbours use Chatroulette. Just bear in mind you might find out more about them than you want to know...

    • I found out about this site and thought it was kind of disturbing. It just seems wrong that someone is going to grab a picture of you and then reveal your location. Why would someone really do this?

    • I have no idea what that's about, but it seems like a bit of a huge invasion of privacy. Just because people use your web service doesn't give you the right to hand out their addresses to everyone. I'd never make public the users addresses on the site I manage. Ever.
