well, the matrix is an interesting analogy. I have to give it to Mr. Smith on this one. All hypotheticals aside however, what is so frustrating to many people is that there really are conscious individuals who care deeply for the natural world. it is where we came from. we have changed that world into a place that (for the most part) strictly accommodates our species. as a global population (even a national population), we cant get it together to live in greater harmony with the living world that surrounds us. so many of the majestic animals that the children of this nation enjoy so much and are fascinated by, are dying and the cause is human carelessness and recklessness. also, many of the plants that hold important medicines are being wiped out. there are countless stories about these fragile ecosystems and tribal groups being harmed and destroyed by big business in the name of greed. open your heart to my frame of reference. if we could rally and be inspired together, we could find a way to work together so that future generations aren't left with a world similar to that from the movie "road warrior". I will never accept the destruction of critical habitats and species as something inevitable. we are of this world. we should embrace the miracle of all life in this world. we are universally connected with all living things. step out of the concrete jungle and experience the splendor of enchanted redwood forests and tropical rain forests. its absolutely amazing. take a child fishing in a lake or mountain stream and connect with the earth. life isn't all about movies, nightclubs, crispy cream donuts, and getting laid. life is more than just washing our awesome cars, or our status in society. life is a miracle and we should honor and respect it to its fullest.

To follow that premise is the same as the conclusion by Agent Smith in The Matrix.
Agent Smith: I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure.
So does it follow that the next evolution of a better species like AI should take over because humans have failed?
After all since humans have made such a mess, why shouldn't they be replaced by more intelligent machines that could do a better job?

shameful. and we have to sacrifice everything it seems, in order to dedicate our entire lives with only a hope that we can change things. where is the revolution over this? I guess people are too busy voting for who their favorite american idol.

The Aral Sea is barely there anymore. We can thank the Soviets and their love for bigtime projects and immense stupidity.

Why does everyone seem to think humanity is a cancer? That's the worst kind of self-deprecation I've ever heard of. I mean sure we've screwed up the planet, but can't we try to find beauty in humanity?

A stray dog digs 30 holes in your yard. He takes a shit on your porch and then pisses on it to keep it moist for your shoe. Next, he tears up your vegetable garden, and pukes the indigestible remains on your porch for your other shoe. Is he a beautiful dog?

Sure he is. If you had a child who misbehaves, you don't just call her a disease and throw her out in the streets, do you?

Kyle_Crenshaw:
That's an interesting thought...I find beauty in individuals, but often, because of things like groupthink, humanity in general is prone to acts of cruelty. That doesn't necessarily mean I dismiss humanity...But I'm not gonna spit on a cupcake and call it frosting.
Another thought- the difference between a child misbehaving and humanity misbehaving is our collective consciousness of humanity's misdeeds. Despite our awareness, we repeat the same acts, over and over again. While a child might see her wrongs, and change, humanity has been static in its primary goal, control the world, since the agricultural revolution...which is difficult to see as beautiful.

its true, there is beauty in life, which includes humanity. one of the problems that I see however, is that we (meaning humanity), are in control of the future of the rest of the living world. a virbrant, innocent, natural world that is part of this harmonious symphony of life. and we are destroying it. thats what cancer does, so the comparison is not absurd. humans are doing quite well overall, in no immediate danger of going extinct. other species of plants and animals are not as fortunate. and of course, pissing and shitting on the land and then finding your next meal so close to your excrement doesn't lend itself to logic. or correct me if i'm wrong. maybe i'm from the twilight zone.
