Dick Aldrich loves to broadcast high school sports games. Through his sports website, MidMoSportsOnline.com, Aldrich's booming professional voice makes it possible for fans, teachers, friends and family of high school players to follow games throughout small towns in central Missouri.

"I had to stop, because of MSHSAA's fees," Aldrich told CountyNewsLIVE.com today. Aldrich believes MSHSAA is showing enormous favoritism toward entrenched radio and TV stations, and toward its own TV arm, MSHSAA.TV a webcasting venture being run by -- well, MSHSAA.

Aldrich believes MSHSAA's actions are inconsistent with the FCC, which has as a stated goal making broadband available everywhere in the U.S. Aldrich believes MSHSAA knows it is slowing the spread of webcasting in small towns.

MSHSAA stands for Missouri State High School Activities Association. The organization operates from headquarters in Columbia, Mo. Technically, schools join MSHSAA voluntarily, but if a school want its students to be able to compete with peer schools, there is little choice but to join MSHSAA. The roster of schools which have joined "voluntarily" runs from "A to Z," Adrian, Mo. to Zalma, Mo.

Because schools pay fees to MSHSAA, the organization ends-up indirectly receiving large sums of Missouri taxpayer dollars.

Largely, MSHSAA operates outside the supervisory reach of the Mo. Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Some Missouri legislators would like to change that. Mo. Representative Gayle Kingery (R., Poplar Bluff) is a member of the House Elementary & Secondary Education Committee, and he has -- more than once -- tried to place the powerful MSHSAA under the control of the Mo. Education Dep't., according to Aldrich.

Aldrich, who is well-known around the State Capitol because he previously held a support job there, is hopeful that Kingery will schedule a hearing on these issues this session. He hopes the subject of MSHSAA fees could be included in such hearings.

Aldrich says that Kingery's latest bill meant to affect MSHSAA controls is H.B. 1563. The bill would allow a student-athlete to take a MSHSAA issue outside of MSHSAA, to the courts. It would have the effect of undercutting some of MSHSAA's powers.

As a webcaster of primarily audio broadcasts, Aldrich said MSHSAA's $45 per-game fees for playoff games ran him "off the air." Two weeks ago, CountyNewsLIVE.com stopped its plans to broadcast Hermann Bearcats basketball (boys and girls) playoff games when it learned MSHSAA's fees for live video streaming were $500 per game for district-level contests and $1,000 per game for sectionals and above.
