Killing mosquitoes with lasers to combat Malaria

This story was latched onto by the gambit of news sources in the middle of 2009. Since then, the development team has added some pretty interesting info on their webpage. Last Feburary several videos of mosquito flight were posted. These were shot at 6000 fps using specially designed photographic rigs (probably much like this one) to make sure the shots were in focus. Now they’re slated to give a talk at the 2010 TED conference. The publication of these talks sometimes lags behind by several months so be patient.
Watch the video after the break to get some abstract shots of the hardware being used; they’re not giving up the goods until the conference.

we used to use hair spray and lighters around 6pm here in LBC. Fun times.

I was in a band once where we had a hairspray and lighters fight, until one guy rigged up BlackFlag Bug Bomb and hairspray cans with a wire coat hanger tying a lighter out in front. His fire gun lit the bass player up who ran through the house with undies ablaze. We threw him the pool.

Once upon a time. - I just started playing again.
I thought it would be kind of like that robot in the old movie Judge Dred - where this thing is sitting under a bench in a pawn shop - and the bad guy sneaks in - and turns it on.

Growing up in a swampy area I have a more intense hate of the little critters than most people. I welcome Any environmentally friendly way of eliminating the little blood suckers.

Skeeders mate by attaining a synchronized buzz between 400 and 600 cycles.
You could have three foot rods that just stick in the ground around ponds. Each equipped with a mic and piezo tweeter that would go on and oscillate against the buzz, defeating their sexual harmony. - 2 years ago

It's all in buzzzzzz...
Ya see - their little ears are attached directly to their little heads - not only does such a device mess with their sex-dance - when it off-sets the frequencies, a phenomenon called "peddle-tones" takes place where pronounced signals of two and three octaves lower are produced.
Imagine you and your sweety humming together while in ardor and a sly tweeter (sticking up outside your window) making a little signal to join with your two's humming that created large-going waves effecting you both like a sludge hammer, in both your little brains and popping your bulbous little eyes right out of both their little sockets. - 2 years ago

Nice to see something old become 'new'... the 'insect recognition program' in the Photonic Fence works on visual identification through shape and sound(irregularities..)...can easily be adjusted to keep specific 'human's' away from the perimeter... not like i would know, (I'm no expert wink)
