After nearly 14 years of dispute over naming rights, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) added to its list of elements in the known universe Copernicium, a heavier relative of zinc, cadmium and mercury.
Controversy arose over wether American scientists or German researchers at the Society for Heavy Ions Research discovered the element first. Now, the IUPAC is agreed that the Germans found it first when they bombarded a lead target with zinc ions.
Sigurd Hofmann, the physicist who lead the German experiment, named his find after the 16th century Polish astronomer Nicolas Copernicus. Hofmann said he did this because he wishes to credit Copernicus alongside the other scientists who have been credited with their own elements in the past.
I guess we'll all have to throw out our old periodic charts and T-Shirts and pre-order the new ones.
