The social networking site said advertisers would be able to buy "Promoted Tweets" that will appear on Twitter's search results pages.
It has been reluctant to allow advertising in the past.
However, co-founder Biz Stone said they would not be traditional adverts. They must be Tweets that "resonate with users" and be part of conversations.
Twitter has already signed up a raft of big name organisations such as Sony Pictures, coffee chain Starbucks and US retailer Best Buy.

Their not selling out though, their a business and have a right to do whatever they want with the service they offer. Do you really think they can go on employing more than 100 technical and service employees without generating some additional revenue? the answer to that is no.

Well actually they are "Selling Out". (Not that I care about all the Twatters out there, I only hope it discourages the Twatting, I mean tweeting.
[TWATTER UPDATE] I'm typing a comment on Current.com at this moment in time.

I don't feel like they're selling out. They're limiting the ads to search pages and relating them to what people are looking for, so they'll hopefully be useful, and the reality is that websites Twitter's size need to make money to stay afloat. How else are they supposed to pay staff, rent office space, fund servers etc.
The alternative is charging people to use the service or selling the business to somebody like a big media agency, which I reckon users would complain about more.
