There are some newer plastics now that are relatively benign in decomposition, however the chances that the Great Pacific Trash Gyre is composed entirely of those plastics is zero.
Perhaps the vast diluting properties of the ocean will address this in some way, but I suspect not, and certainly not successfully.
I've seen a lifetime of "proposed projects" depicted (some in this forum recently) which are nothing more than purile fantasy drawings driven by ego and the desire for publicity.
It would be wonderful if this were not one of them, but I'd like to see more (in fact, any) of the research behind the effects of further coalescing and maintaining the plastic trash gyre as a island, habitable or not. - 2 years ago

That is a fascinating idea and it would be interesting to see more research to find out if this is plausible based on current technology. If nothing else, creativity breeds more creativity. The more options there are, the more likely one will be a viable solution.
