Fiery rings of ionised gas erupt from the sun in the first videos taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. The satellite is delivering unprecedented views of the star, which could help untangle the mysteries of its magnetic field and improve forecasts of solar storms on Earth.

Wow very nice view. But that magnificent ball of fire could be so scary considering what it can do to Earth if it emits more than it should. Good to know there are people watching over it.=)

Just imagine that one day, one giant flash can fry the entire earth. As humans, in our arrogance, we feebly combat "man-made" global warming.

Great images and a very important mission, solar activity has a profound effect on earth.
A large solar flare can knock out communication and power on a national scale.
Being able to understand/predict solar activity can only be beneficial. - 3 years ago
