DARPA, the Department of Defense office that is tasked with exploring futuristic technologies that may have military applications, held an industry day workshop for companies earlier this year to solicit proposals for developing a prototype vehicle. Proposals are due May 27.
The Transformer will give troops the ability to avoid traditional and unconventional threats such as ambushes and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and road obstructions. DARPA envisions a variety of use-case scenarios for the TX, including strike and raid, interdiction, intervention, insurgency/counterinsurgency, reconnaissance, medical evacuation and logistics supply."

There is just something so depressing about living in a world where the only people that get to play with cool toys have to sign away their sovereignty over to the military and be willing to commit murder. Perhaps we will become the demons we so often fear in our myths.

Great, technology that could take us truly into the 21st century has to be used for military purposes first. We truly are blood thirsty war mongers.

the idea is awesome but for god's sake can we stop making things like this for war? Why is it always for war?

ummmm, HELLO!!!!
hello out there technology lovers. hello to those that think science reigns supreme. hello!!! this is FOR THE MILITARY THAT WILL USE IT TO INVADE, OCCUPY and otherwise RULE OTHER PEOPLE.
sure this is cool. hooray we can fly around. but COME ON! do we really need more ways to spend billions of dollar to fight terrorists? what is this project going to cost? billions of dollars? why don't we contract out food producers companies that grow organic goods, feed people in our country that are starving and then start tackling fresh water? we don't need flying cars, we need to get people food, water and decent healthcare.
why do we all jump on board when its flashy technology? do we need flying cars to fight the terrorists? WE ARE THE TERRORISTS! we start the wars. we build the weapons, we have an economy based on warfare.
people are against war, but happy that we are making flying cars to use in WAR? get a grip.
before we get all giddy and happy about the "wonders" of science, lets actually think about what these projects mean.

Thank you, I couldn't agree more. More wasteful defense tax dollar spending while people go hungry, unemployed, and without the basic necessities of life.

I remember something like this being tried around 1983 or so. It had a tendency to flip. I can't remember what it was called though.

Sounds kind of like an inefficient helicopter. It's comforting to know that civilians will never posess this technology. We can't even control a vehicle on the horizontal axis.

This may not be what the army has designed, but here is a picture of an actual "Flying Car" from http://www.technewsdaily.com/coolest-vehicles-youll-never-get-to-ride-0283/2

it's a good place to start. there's like 20 years of research in that thing. IIRC the issue with it is it turns out if only one engine gives out the whole thing falls out of the air. Killed the first owner. It's the same problem with offset dual rotor helicopters of any kind. The Osprey also has the same problem. this is one I think will stay on the drawing board.
But as long as I'm flapping my jaw without any kind of authority or special knoledge at all I might as well go for it;
The only way I can think of to make something like this go off hand is some sort of traditional light helicopter with simplified automated controls. Maybe a 4 or 5 blade to shorten the rotor length enough for folding. It's gonna be a might ugly when they're done though.
Possibly use a microturbine like a capstone cp200 or something to drive the rotors directly with an alternator attached that could make enough juice to push an electric drive train for the wheels. significant batteries would make it a heavy sonofabitch though it would allow for only occasional use of the engine for ground travel making it not tooo terribly inefficient..It's only a little bit stupider than the electric spy robobats they're already funding.

Delia, there's just one ap you neglected to mention. When the
Jetson's are forced to quarter soldiers in their homes to put
new meaning in the term " homeland security " , while George
Jetson is out working to payroll them through his taxes, and
the wife is out shopping, and Elroy & his sister are in school,
and the robo maid is getting an overhaul...Well the soldiers
will have to make a special trip to take Astro, their dog to the
vet. Flying Astro there will be a real time saver. Well they always
did say the world would go to the dogs. I guess the future is now,

This is going to be mainstream in another ten or fifteen years. I am really surprised that the Goverment has not done it in the past. This is a picture of one of my favorites . There is another one in my folder some where but this is still a cool car.
