Christian Recording Artist Jennifer Knapp is just the way she is and doesn't care who knows it. The former Christian music singer, whose last album "Way I Am" was released in 2001, has come out as a lesbian, CNN reports.
The Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter vanished from the music scene seven years ago amidst rumors - which now turn out to be true - that she was gay.
Prior to the release of her new album "Letting Go" next month, Knapp reveals that she has been in a same-sex relationship for eight years.
"I'm aware that the evangelical community has problems with divorce and many other facets of their artists, let alone homosexuality," she told CNN. "The last thing I wanted to do was to have someone go out and buy a record and feel like they had been hoodwinked."
The 36-year-old singer has traded in Christian rock for a folksy new sound and is thus no longer working with a faith-based label.
Knapp tells CNN that she moved to Australia in 2003 in order to recuperate from exhaustion.
The singer’s career took off in 1998, when her first hit single, "Undo Me," was released. The next year she performed at Lilith Fair and won the 1999 Dove Awards for New Artist and Best Rock Song for "Undo Me," from her debut album "Kansas" (1998). Her 2000 album "Lay It Down" earned her a Grammy nomination in 2001.
The Kansas native began writing music again two years ago and says her decision to reveal her sexuality happened "organically."
Knapp is one of the few female faith-based musicians to come out.
In 2008, Christian singer-songwriter Ray Boltz revealed he was gay. A year later, gospel singer Tonex revealed his homosexuality on the popular Christian show "The Lexi Show."
"Letting Go" will hit shelves on May 11.
