Air Force's Falcon Hypersonic Glider Disappears Mysteriously

The Falcon was supposed to splash down in the Pacific Ocean after a 30-minute, 4,100-nautical-mile test flight. Not to be confused with the unmanned X-37B space shuttle—which launched on April 22—the Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 blasted off last week from the Vandenberg Air Force Base on a Minotaur IV rocket.
Instead of completing its flight, however, the Air Force lost all contact with the aircraft. According to DARPA's Johanna Spangenberg Jones:
Preliminary review of data indicates the HTV-2 achieved controlled flight within the atmosphere at over Mach 20. Then contact with HTV-2 was lost. This was our first flight (all others were done in wind tunnels and simulations) so although of course we would like to have everything go perfectly, we still gathered data and can use findings for the next flight, scheduled currently for early 2011.
Just that: The telemetry data signal vanished, and the aircraft is nowhere to be found. Being a semi-secret project, nothing else has been disclosed. The only logical explanations are 1) a massive structural failure, 2) Nazi UFOs or 3) somebody lost it in a beer garden. I will pick number two for the time being.
The hypersonic glider is built by Lockheed Martin under a DARPA program. It's designed to launch conventional weapons against any target in the planet in just one hour. This capability makes it a perfect substitute for Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles. Unlike ICBMs loaded with conventional heads, the plane can't be mistaken with a nuclear missile, so it won't make other nuclear powers to hit the red button. Maybe.

Mach 20 would pass 3 countries just to make a U-turn. It has no where else to go but to space. It would have to push it's limits and it can only do that in a place with the air does not have a drag force. It's probably just an updated version of the blackbird. The blackbird was up to Mach 10 in the 80's it's now 2010. If the news posted Mach 20 it's probably faster then that by far. What you should really worry about is what it was carrying before it allegedly disappeared? People would have caught that explosion from the ground. Unless it was one of the giant fireball meteor things the news reported a week ago.lol

my guess it is opened up a wormhole and passed right through. some primitive planet will find the technology and 2,000 years from now we will be attacked by the same species we gave the technology to in the first place...

In a nuclear world on hairtrigger, this is truly a psychotic break-with-reality weapons program. My guess is that a Mach 20 glider could deploy dozens of H-bombs on pre-emptive first strike targets. Its only purpose is to use its momentum and maneuverability to evade anti-missile missiles in a way that dumb missiles can't do.
At Mach 20, if the stupid thing suddenly flipped over it would expose a heat-sensitive surface, broil from the inside out and maybe a few pieces of insulation batting would reach earth.

Interesting that the Russians are more willing for the U.S. to develop this technology than the "missile shield" technology. L.A. to New York in 30 minutes...yeah, that's fast (assuming they find a way to build one that actually reaches its destination...).

A "pre-strike" tech,....doesn't weaken a "final strike" response the way a functional "missile shield technology" does. The balance of power is actually less threatened. Not saying the math is humanistic ,...

Mach 20?!?! I'm willing to bet it never landed anywhere.
This reminds me a bit of a story I read once about a guy who had the bright idea to make a hypersonic bullet by necking down a .50 cal. round to fit a .22 long rifle bullet. the round vaporized 3 feet from the end of the barrel.

The concussion from the charge alone is enough to kill someone up close. I have got six an eight quail with one shot with a 30-06 just by fireing into the cuvey when feeding stuns them pretty good. all ya gotta do is put a little grain in one spot an wait for a few to start feeding then shoot into the middle of it works every time.
