Hugo Chavez decides to Tweet

Hugo Chavez is chirping differently about Twitter.

In late January, Chavez suspended the license of RCTV, a media outlet that opposes the Venezuelan rulers politics. This inspired a spat of Anti-Chavez criticism on Twitter.

Chavez responded by calling Twitter an "instrument of terrorism."

At 12:14 local time (which is 30-minutes off any time zone you're familiar with.) Chavez posted his first message on the "instrument of terrorism." His username is @chavezcandanga.

The BBC translated his first official tweet as:

"Hey how's it going? I appeared like I said I would: at midnight. I'm off to Brazil. And very happy to work for Venezuela. We will be victorious!!"

A Chavez aide announced that Chavez supporters plan to "storm" other social networking sites.

"The opposition thinks it owns the social networking sites - they think Twitter and Facebook belong to them, we're fighting and there are seven million of us who will have Twitter!" said Public Works Minister Diosdado Cabello.

Reuters reports that there are more than 200,000 active accounts, in Venezuela. Venezuela has one of the highest rates per capita of Twitter users in Latin America.

True/Slant has acquired EXCLUSIVE and HILARIOUSLY FAKE Hugo Chavez tweets.
