Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg: "Privacy changes coming ASAP"

After weeks of negative stories about Facebook's confusing privacy settings, in which the web giant was accused of putting the monetisation of the site before its customers, the social network's founder Mark Zuckerberg has written an open letter, outlining imminent changes.
In a candid confession, Zuckerberg admitted that Facebook sometimes 'moves too fast' but is working on fixing the mistakes they've made on privacy.
Writing in the Washington Post, he said that "sometimes we move too fast - and after listening to recent concerns, we're responding. Our intention was to give you lots of granular controls; but that may not have been what many of you wanted. We just missed the mark".
He conceded that things needed to be simplified and added that "in the coming weeks, we will add privacy controls that are much simpler to use".
Of particular interest was the five principles Zuckerberg says Facebook operates under:
" - You have control over how your information is shared.
- We do not share your personal information with people or services you don't want.
- We do not giver advertisers access to your personal information.
- We do not and never will sell any of your information to anyone.
- We will always keep Facebook a free service for everyone."
Since more than half of Facebook's users have indicated they could quit over privacy concerns, will this be enough to help slow the backlash?

It's my belief that Facebook should certainly allow those who'd like to share all their personal information publicly. However, I also think that the default setting should be "100% Private." That way, if you want to divulge more to the public, you have the option, but unsuspecting users won't up and realize that the world can see their phone number and address overnight when Facebook suddenly flips the switch (as has happened many times).

It's too late now. The damage has been done, and Facebook's reputation won't ever be the same again.
