quit whining about NASA, will you? It was cut because it was a massive waste of taxpayer money. Very little money actually went to the space program. NASA was made and always was intended to be a place to facilitate the creation of new technologies. It lost its purpose over the years because of red tape and bureaucracy. Now it can stop wasting money on shuttles. We need to develop space technologies more freely.

Modern medicine is what blessed that baby. It's an insult to the progress of humanity to think that God let that baby be born deaf and then when humans using advanced hard earned knowledge fix god's mistake to then ask god to bless the child. if your god gave two shits about that baby he would have heard his mother's voice on day one.

Just because the infant has a a cochlear implant doesn't mean he won't need to also learn sign language. It is likely that he will need to learn sign language & lip reading to actually comprehend everything people say. I occasionally do not hear so well myself. In a crowded room I find it unlikely that he will be able to comprehend much of anything that is said. Probably, he will need to rely on his lip reading & sign language skills. But, the more ways a person has of hearing language the more adaptable and easier the his life will be. My hearing is very precious to me but it is not the only way to "hear" people.

I think it is absolutely amazing that technology allows those who choose to make this decision hear. But that's what it is; a decision. And from all my research, cochlear does not cure every type of deafness. Also, for the guy who actually called sign language "embarrassing", you should be ashamed of yourself. It's wonderful the cochlear worked for your brother but if someone chooses to not have this procedure done, OR it doesn't work, why would any one with an ounce of compassion/intelligence call communication (whether manual or verbal) "embarrassing"? This baby smile made me smile and it is what it is -- amazing!

I love sign language--besides being a wonderful language in and of itself, it helped me communicate with and teach my little boy with Down syndrome until he learned to speak well.
You know, not all kinds of deafness can be helped with cochlear implants. There will always be people who need sign language, and it's a rich and full language. But if there's a whole sense (hearing) that a person is missing out on and can be given, what a gift!

He should NEVER learn sign language! We have the technology to make anyone who has never had hearing, hear again! The sign language community is a cult and the cochlear implant is making their lifestyle die. My brother was deaf at birth can hear and talk perfectly normal with the implant! NO NEED FOR EMBARRASSING SIGN LANGUAGE! Every 6 months the software gets updated and the device gets better and better. Don't believe the lies that a cochlear implant doesn't give you back full hearing. It is an absolute falsehood lie!!!!

I hope you are kidding. Sign language is not embarrassing and the Deaf Culture is not a cult! Sign language is a recognized foreign language. It even differs from country to country just like spoken languages. The Death are a proud community. The cochlear implant is a medical miracle, but a very controversial surgery among hearing and Deaf. Children born hearing to deaf parents and vice versa, struggle their whole lives trying to fit in to a culture. As a brother, you should have researched and found out as much as you could to see what your brother is and has gone through. You are incredibly selfish and ignorant.

Very heart warming, indeed.
However, it's important to realize that cochlear implants (CI) restore only *some* sound (25 of the 200). Implanted at an early age, deaf children with CI are able to make more sense of the limited information, but they will never have full access to the complete range of sounds. CI are a wonderful technology, but it's not a cure all as of yet (e.g. Deaf children with CI still have difficulty following conversations in group settings). I hope the parents still encourage their child to learn sign language, in addition to speech, so he can function in both the hearing and deaf communities and choose to enter the community he wants. Hearing parents who have a deaf child, in essence, are raising a child that similar to a transracial adopted child. No matter how much the parents will want the child to be like them (a hearing person), society will always view this child through a different lens (a deaf person), so why not prepare this child for that inevitability.

Well after being bombarded by moronic comments by certain people who have apparently deselected there option to receive notifications I must say I'm flabbergasted how ignorant some people are but that's not the main point of this comment.
Thank you person who had submitted this into stumbleupon because even though the comments were worse then those worthy of youtube's worst comments of all time, the video (which is the main purpose and I'm going to assume only purpose of the submission) I am just purely happy that you had submited this.
The sight on the baby's face is priceless such as most other baby's but knowing that the baby now has a chance to grow up to and listen to music and play music, and I'm aware that you don't have to hear to play music but it sure adds joy to it. Also hearing the mothers voice and recognizing it other then in other then the mothers womb would be fantastic and amazing for the baby, it brings quite a level of joy to my heart. - 2 years ago

This is for "izzysgirl" You said that GOD made him deaf and maybe that's the way he should stay. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, GOD made you stupid and that's the way you will stay. This will be the ONLY time that I address you because you are to much of an idiot for me to care about what you write. I just want to let you know what I think. If the words I use are to big for you to understand you should think about getting a dictionary. You said something about making personality judgment's about other people I'm going to make one right now: I believe you when you say that you are not "cliquey" because to be "cliquey" you would have to have friends that you hang out with. By what you write and the way that you write it we (everyone that reads your comments) know that you do not have any friends (friends are people who like you)Because, no one is that stupid (except you).

Yeah, given the nature of your reply which Nancy_Sandoval is responding to, I wouldn't doubt you stopped reading, though I suspect it has less to do with your taking offense to Nancy's choice of words and expression and more to do with a nail being hit right on the head.
By the way, commenting anything to the effect of, "Glory to G-d? G-d didn't invent the technology . . . people did. G-d made him deaf. Maybe he was meant to be that way?" seems kind of callous and cold hearted. Probably because it is. Perhaps another way to look at this is, God made the child deaf so that we would feel the need to conquer the child's disability through technology thus improving the child's life and furthering our studies in the sciences. But then again, that would have required some creative thinking to a very mild extent, and I stress very mild because I have family members who are extremely religious and none too bright who would have made this kind of argument because all it requires is some optimistic thinking rather than looking for a conflict.
Two more things before my rant is done.
First, why the hell are you omitting the "o" out of the word "God?" Blasphemy means taking the lords name in vain, not using it as a proper noun to identify God. Uses that would not be Blasphemy would include, "There God is, Glory to God, God didn't... God made, God is," etc.
According to Uncyclopedia, "What constitutes blasphemy include:
Saying mean things about God or Jesus.
Saying God or Jesus next to a derogatory word. Examples include "god damn it", "Jesus fucking Christ", or "Fuck Rush Limbaugh"
Pointing out to religious people the flaws in their logic.
Reading the Skeptic's Annotated Bible
Reading the Skeptic's Annotated Quran
Reading the Skeptic's Annotated Book of Mormon
Actually being a skeptic of religion
Not worshipping The One True God every week, even if you don't know which god that is or which sectarian faith represents that deity as that is your problem and not the Lord's or Jesus's problem.
Saying God's name too loud.
Sneezing in Church.
Wearing boots.
Thinking about members of the opposite sex.
Thinking about members of your own sex.
Thinking."Second, given your track record for not finishing things that you are offended by (which is odd considering you said something pretty damn offensive without without either considering or caring that it might be offensive) I don't really expect you to read entirely through this or I expect you might skip to the end. In either case the point of what I have written isn't really to make you look or feel stupid. Trust me, you made yourself look stupid and how you feel right now is probably how being stupid feels. So no matter what I wrote, it wouldn't accomplish anything new on that front. The point is to have fun at your expense. We are indeed laughing, and we're not laughing with you. You can try to figure out what that means on your own.

Just curious about one other thing. If you argue that God made him deaf and there should be no glory to God because he was gifted with the ability to hear, then should we say Glory to science? Would you prefer that? Or would you prefer that glory go to God because he gave the scientist the ability and knowledge to create the technology? I'm confused. Please clarify.

I think that it is amazing seeing that baby smile at his Mom. I also think that no one should get angry because a parent wants to make sure all of their child's senses work. If a child can't see right they are fitted with glasses and sometime have surgery on their eyes, I see the CI as the same thing, restoration of a sense. I do realize that CI has faults and doesn't work for everyone, but it is a parents job to do the research and make the best decision for their child that they can.

I'm not exactly which words you have assumed were "big", but I assure you that my vocabulary far exceeds the average bear's. It's usually a job requirement for writers. As far as my hatred towards people is concerned (mind you, because I don't want to be mislabeled as some sort of bigot, allow me to make the case that I'm not a fan of the human race in its present condition of acute consumerism, oversensitivity, and extreme idiocy, inasmuch as you've so demonstrated), your bristling at the notion that someone could get joy from seeing a small child hear for the first time, and then your abject need to troll for arguments (which is precisely what I believe you're doing) is exactly what I would argue is the heart of the fault found in the human condition. Such a strong desire to be heard and make such a fuss seems so childish and selfish to me, especially after reading your reply to me, almost goading me into an argument. You, child, are laughable, as is your case that you attempted to make. You made it so with your incessant need to argue everyone's comments. Had it been a single statement, it might have had poignancy and you would not have jumped up on my radar as one that needed to be told a firm "shut the fuck up". But you posted several negative comments, and continued to do so, on and on. That's why your argument holds absolutely no water; you appear as one grasping at the air, a sort of "poor, poor me" sob-story. So play your comment game (I simply labeled everything that you post as spam, so it does alert me by phone anymore) and continue to believe that others are out to get you, at the same time believing that you have no faults to be found. Might I suggest that you, my dear, remove your head from your own ass.

I think my deaf, friends who are married, have children, own homes and cars and have jobs and families and take vacations, watch tv, talk on the phone, make love, have arguments, cook meals, go on Facebook, play video games and do everything else you do might disagree.

I'm neither snobby nor cliquey and you shouldn't make personality judgements on people you've never met. Also, I don't see a reference to any snobby or cliquey group in your original post. I see a reference to people who are "super against anything that helps you to be normal" and "advocates for embracing everything possible to blend in". I have no idea which group I'm in according to your "standards" because you have yet to define what is "normal". I DO see that you're a person who needs to put others down in order to feel (or make others think you are) superior. Won't work with me.

Cute little bugger lol. I can only imagine how it must be to go from hearing nothing to being able to hear everything and his smile was fucking adorable, even HE was incredibly happy to hear for the first time and at that age he didn't know what hearing was! lol.
If any of you have children with the same problem or anything along those lines let me explain to you what happened. I figure it's very important to know what you're getting into before you actually do it. Cochlea are hairs down in your ear that pick up frequencies, and every single time you break one of those hairs or bend them you lose a frequency. For instance, let's say that I can hear at 20kHz -- which is as far as the human hearing range goes -- if I break ONE hair I could lose 1kHz.
I go to college for audio production so for me this is crucial to avoid because my ears are my tools for music. I'm not exactly sure how much others care for their hearing but let me put it like this. There's an extent of noise that your ear can take at one time, once you reach as far as you can go this point is called "The Threshold of Pain". It's VERY simple to reach that limit, for example, even TRAFFIC almost reaches the threshold. Now think about all the things that are louder than traffic that you jam into your ear. That's why it's important to wear ear plugs to concerts and just about anywhere you feel is comfortable and don't blare loud music in your cars or in your headphones.

The cochlea (singular) is not a cell; rather, it is the structure that houses both inner and outer hair cells.
