What would happen if the world stopped turning?

Boing boing has a great post asking what would happen to the world stopped turning (in a non conspiracy way).

The article talks about how experts who made a geographic information system say the result of a non spinning world would mean the oceans would move to the poles, leaving a massive land mass in the middle.

"If the earth stood still, the oceans would gradually migrate toward the poles and cause land in the equatorial region to emerge. This would eventually result in a huge equatorial megacontinent and two large polar oceans."-Boing Boing

Now I just want to see a sci fi film with a planet like this in it.

    • It seems this merits more discussion.

Er... the earth is an oblate spheroid not because the rock is round and the water is flung out by centrifugal force. Instead, the whole thing is flattened. Ergo, should the Earth's spinning be halted, the crust near the equator will settle and the crust near the poles will rise-- obviating the all-the-water-drains-to-the-poles silliness.

    • I had actually watched a TV show on the National Geographic Channel last week that explained exactly what would happen.

I assume this is exactly where this person got the info from, copied it & passed it off as their own work. Better luck next time!
