NASA scientists braced for 'solar tsunami' to hit earth

The solar fireworks at the weekend were recorded by several satellites, including Nasa’s new Solar Dynamics Observatory which watched its shock wave rippling outwards. Astronomers from all over the world witnessed the huge flare above a giant sunspot the size of the Earth, which they linked to an even larger eruption across the surface of Sun.
The explosion was aimed directly towards Earth, which then sent a “solar tsunami” racing 93 million miles across space. Images from the SDO hint at a shock wave travelling from the flare into space, the New Scientist reported.
Experts said the wave of supercharged gas will likely reach the Earth on Tuesday, when it will buffet the natural magnetic shield protecting Earth. It is likely to spark spectacular displays of the aurora or northern and southern lights. Scientists have warned that a really big solar eruption could destroy satellites and wreck power and communications grids around the globe if it happened today.
Nasa recently warned that Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation “space storm”. The Daily Telegraph disclosed in June that senior space agency scientists believed the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013.
Dr Lucie Green, of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, Surrey, followed the flare-ups using Japan's orbiting Hinode telescope. It remains unclear, however, how much damage this latest eruption will cause the world’s communication tools. "It looks like the first eruption was so large that it changed the magnetic fields throughout half the Sun's visible atmosphere and provided the right conditions for the second eruption.
"Both eruptions could be Earth-directed but may be travelling at different speeds.
“This means we have a very good chance of seeing major and prolonged effects, such as the northern lights at low latitudes." A Nasa spokesman was unavailable for comment.

This is a class C-3 solar flare. Okay so what does that actually mean anway?
"Scientists classify solar flares according to their x-ray brightness in the wavelength range 1 to 8 Angstroms. There are 3 categories: X-class flares are big; they are major events that can trigger planet-wide radio blackouts and long-lasting radiation storms. M-class flares are medium-sized; they can cause brief radio blackouts that affect Earth's polar regions. Minor radiation storms sometimes follow an M-class flare. Compared to X- and M-class events, C-CLASS FLARES ARE SMALL WITH FEW NOTICEABLE CONSEQUENCES HERE ON EARTH."

There is no significant threat from this outburst, what most people will probably notice are some pretty light. There's 10% change of disturbance in high latitudes and 5% in the mid.
While the observation of the tsunami on the sun is significant for the study of the suns behavior and the threat from CMEs is real, I think some people are exploiting the threat of solar events as a another excuse to consolidate international institutions.

Okay gang here is the real crappy part. The sun is about to begin acting normal again. Yes, I said normal. You see, for the last like 50 years the sun has been a sleepy star. Now all this activity that WILL be here over the next few years is going to release more heat toward the earth. Then add to this the fact that right now the orbit of the earth to the sun will be closer to the inside limits of the Goldilocks zone, and we are going to heat up fast. All of this would not be a big problem but Global Warming, that Co2 and methane and other greenhouse gasses, are going to trap that extra star heat in the earths atmosphere. Straight up, by by ice caps, hello 200 feet rise in the oceans. The earth will finally put an end to the virus mankind.
Hey, check me out! I am not talking out my backside kids. Love you all but we may all be out of the pool soon. - 1 year ago

COMPLEX ERUPTION ON THE SUN: On August 1st, the entire Earth-facing side of the sun erupted in a tumult of activity. There was a C3-class solar flare, a solar tsunami, multiple filaments of magnetism lifting off the stellar surface, large-scale shaking of the solar corona, radio bursts, a coronal mass ejection and more. Click on the image to view just a fraction of the action:
Movie formats: 21 Mb Quicktime, 2 MB iPad, 0.8 MB iPhone
The movie recorded by extreme UV cameras onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory shows an enormous magnetic filament breaking away from the sun. Some of the breakaway material is now en route to Earth in the form of a coronal mass ejection (CME, movie).
Seeing the sun erupt on such a global scale has galvanized the international community of solar physicists. Researchers are still sorting out the complex sequence of events and trying to understand why they all happened at once. Stay tuned for more movies and analyses in the days ahead.

From Skymania................
Double blast on Sun aimed at Earth
Posted on August 2nd, 2010
A blast of violent space weather could hit the Earth tomorrow following two massive explosions on the Sun. NASA astronomers witnessed a huge flare above a giant sunspot the size of our planet and linked to an even larger eruption across the surface of Sun.
Photo Caption: Solar activity from SoHo observatory
The Sun viewed on August 1 from SoHo (ESA/NASA)
By chance, the explosions were aligned towards Earth, sending a solar tsunami racing millions of miles across space.
Experts estimate a wave of supercharged gas called plasma will reach us this Tuesday when it will buffet the natural magnetic shield protecting Earth. It could trigger spectacular displays of the aurora or northern and southern lights.
The solar outbursts on Sunday August 1 were recorded by several satellites including NASA’s new Solar Dynamics Observatory which watched its shockwave rippling outwards. The flare over the sunspot was swiftly followed by an eruption 250,000 miles (400,000 km) away in a feature called a filament
UK solar expert Dr Lucie Green, of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, in Surrey, followed the flare-ups using Japan’s orbiting Hinode telescope.
She said last night: “What wonderful fireworks the Sun has been producing! This was a very rare event – not one, but two almost simultaneous eruptions from different locations on the sun were launched toward the Earth.
“These eruptions occur when immense magnetic structures in the solar atmosphere lose their stability and can no longer be held down by the sun’s huge gravitational pull. Just like a coiled spring suddenly being released, they erupt into space.
“It looks like the first eruption was so large that it changed the magnetic fields throughout half the Sun’s visible atmosphere and provided the right conditions for the second eruption. Both eruptions could be Earth-directed but may be travelling at different speeds. This means we have a very good chance of seeing major and prolonged effects, such as the northern lights at low latitudes.”
Dr Green pointed out that if the eruptions do collide with the Earth’s magnetic field the conditions need to be right for there to be an effect like the northern lights. Specifically, the magnetic field at the front of the eruption needs to be pointing north. For latest news on the eruptions, check out Spaceweather.com.
Scientists have warned that a really big solar eruption, like the Carrington Event witnessed from Surrey in 1859, could destroy satellites and wreck power and communications grids around the globe if it happened today.
Such an event would be the biggest disaster ever to hit mankind, preventing the production of essential supplies including food, water and medicines. Other eruptions have been observed directed towards us but thankfully less severe.
