Human race to be extinct in 200 years

Image

Yikes, did you know the “Brain of Britain” Stephen Hawking has said that he predicts the human race will come to an end in 200 years. Mr. Hawking also said that our only chance of survival is to get beyond earth and inhabit other planets in the vastness of space.

Mr. Hawking said that our only chance of survival is to move away from Earth and the sooner we do it, the better. The Daily Mail which interviewed Mr. Hawlking said that he was optimistic about we humans making it on another planet or multiple planets. Mr. Hawking also said that this is not the first time humanity has had faced the question of survival and quoted “the cuban missle crisis in 1963 was one of them”.

He predicts that things will only be worse in the future and the only way our species can live is to spread out in the vastness of space. Mr. Hawking is known for his acute insight of the future and his contribution to science has been extraordinary.

He was in news earlier this year when he warned against making contact with aliens as they could turn hostile. Mr. Hawking said that the last 100 years have seen remarkable progress and this should continue towards a future in space.

When asked about if humans would pollute the space with such inter-stellar travel he said, “We are just a blip on the radar and technology by then will be more about efficiency than pollution”.

    • Where does it actually say that he believes we will be extinct in 200 years? I have read the full interview and listened to it too. It is complete rubbish, he never said it. How cheap.

It was the Daily Mail...not like they have to actually listen to what the person being interviewed says, that won't nearly frighten their audience enough.

    • TRIPE! as much as hawking may think he knows, he's clearly NOT a futurist and definitly NOT biologist. life has a way of surviving almost anything. pollution alone will NOT lead to our extinction. the ONLY way humans will go extinct in such a short time is if someone, probably religious nutbags, TRY to make it... and aside from the atmostphere itself being poisonous to us, there really is NO way this can happen. we will evolve, our technology will evolve, life will go on.

    • The problems with humans are the same things that makes us great. Our consciousness and ability to think and rationalize give us all the delusion that we are separate from the universe. Because of this delusion we have compassion and care only for our own desires and the desires of those closest to us. We all have to realize that we are a part of one whole; the universe. We must have compassion and care for EVERYTHING that makes up our conscious experience, living or not.

    • I think we will see only a partial extinction sometime in the near future. It will be due to one or both of the following reasons.

First, global warming is starting to make significant changes in the weather patterns which in turn is starting to effect the food supplies. Some people will be lost due to extreme weather conditions that spot the earth. We are starting to see signs of these changes even now.

Secondly, I anticipate we will see a major war erupt most likely based out of either Pakistan and/or Iran. This war will have the potential of going global and could quite possibly involve nuclear weapons on their part. If this in fact happens, many humans will obviously cease to exist.

In either case, I do believe however that the human race will not become extinct here on earth for about another 5000 to 7000 years. By that time we will have discovered how to travel through space and jump galaxies by some means or another. Most likely by the use of worm holes. This technology won't be discovered until we learn as humans how to control ourselves and become more peaceful.

As humans, our egos are enormous. We are inclined to assume that we are the only humanoids or intelligent life forms in existence. Religion tends to assist our egos in this line of reasoning. Based on the size of space and the age of everything in it, this is quite a naive and presumptuous line of thought.

There are indications that aliens may have visited this earth numerous times down through the centuries. The Bible references such an event. In biblical times, anything that came from the heavens, according to the people of the time, had to be either a God or an Angel. At one point, the Bible indicates that some Angels looked down and saw some desirable earthly maidens and came and had their way with them. If this in fact happened, it is most likely these were alienoids not Gods or Angels.

So if aliens do exist which is highly probable, based on the size of space, the likely hood of some turning quite hostile as Stephen Hawking suggests I think would be more based on their being hostile already. They are most likely not all from the same place. I am certain there are those that are hostile and others who are not. This would be consistent with most other species that we find even amongst humans.

I don't believe they all look like little, bulbous headed, saucer eyed, three foot tall creatures. It is quite possible some look just like us along with many other shapes and sizes. This would only seem logical.

In any case, all of us here will become extinct long before the human race becomes extinct. Our choices do however impact those to follow us so we should make them wisely. I do believe in reincarnation and if I am correct, then in a sense, our choices of today will at some point in time come back to haunt ourselves. So we should make our choices accordingly.

Based on our level of thought, logically, you are absolutely correct. So a curious question would be: If there is a beginning to everything and God does exist, when and how did he begin and when and how will he end?

I agree that Stephen is a genius but even so, it doesn't make him accurate on everything that comes from his mind or mouth.

It is true that many are greedy and self-centered. British Petroleum is a classical example of the greed you speak of. However, the masses are becoming more aware and educated as to the need for a change in our sources of energy. Having said this, I believe the push for better and more efficient technology is forth coming.

The will and the needs of the masses will soon outweigh the agendas of the greedy sufficiently to initiate a change. Once new sources and means are discovered, the greedy will rise again and find a new way to satisfy their obsessions of greed. They always do.

There no such company as British Petroleum...it changed it's name a while ago, it's legal name is now just BP, but no matter how many times people say it American's don't seem to take a hint...Despite the fact around 40% of it's stocks are owned by Americans.

British Petroleum/BP or whatever is still the same piece of shit we know it for and the damage that it has done. They can change their name, they can change their CEO as often as they like but they are still who they are and their history is still the same.

Please note: Prince and BP are in no way the same on any level other than changing their names.

All Native American's knew that this would happen the day that they Europeans came here taking and using all the natural resources for personal gain and exploiting and killing everything in site? Didn't they think that all this would end eventually??? We warned them numerous time's to no avail? Maybe they will listen now, but it's too late for that!

    • Is the Universe consciously aware of its existence?
I posed this question to some friends of mine, while making dinner at a friends house this weekend. An yes, there was consumption of alcohol and cannabis, so you may have an idea as to why we may have been discussing such a topic. Not that sober people don't discuss this sort of thing but hey, I think you get my drift. Anyway, the reactions I received where as followed.
Some gave me looks as though I were insane. Others had a face of real wonder. While others were just enjoying the fact that we just took our conversation there.
One said, "you're trippin" Another said, "maybe, yeah". Another said, "I don't know". And I said, "Yes. Definitively".
"Dick, stupid, you're crazy" was the reaction to my answer. Followed by ,"OK then, why do you think that?".
My answer, "Well, we are created in this Universe. Which I say, 'is safe to say that the Universe created man. And man is aware of its own existence, as well as the existence of this Universe". "So, we are that part of the Universe that is consciously aware of itself". I got some some nods, as well as surprised expressions, but no real disagreement. I guess I made my hypothesis. Is it really that simple? What do you think? Have I made my point or am I really "off my rocker".
A lot of people have separated themselves from reality by disconnecting themselves from creatively thinking and forming ideas, to believing in fantasy stories gathered from a movie or some other form of media, analyzing the Universe and everything in it as if though they were disconnected from it. This is a great tragedy that exist in todays cultures and must change if man is to move forward with what I think is man's ongoing mission which is to not only introduce life to all parts of the Universe, but conscious life, human life.
My image of man is great. It's infinitely good. Consciousness, awareness, and goodness that go beyond the limits of our small planet. And until the rest of man begins to see itself as that great image, then we will keep destroying everything that makes us the greatest potential this universe has ever created. Something that goes beyond life and death. Beyond space and time. If we fail in this mission, then we not only fail ourselves. We fail the infinitely great Universe, that spend billions of years to finally create us and get to this point. Thinking this way is what creates defines true immortality. Not for one man, but for all men.
I guess I made my hypothesis. A short version, that is. Now, is it really that simple? What do you think? Have I made my point or am I really "off my rocker"?

What if the big bang happened a trillion times in a trillion different places over the last trillion years? What if the Cambrian explosion was nothing more than a transplant from some other planetary system from some other galaxy? Did it happened by aliens, God or a meteor? Does this mean there isn't a God? Does it have to be one or the other?

Our egos and religion are the only things that keep us from viewing the possibilities realistically and logically.

I lean left and I love learning survival skills. I have a backpack I take everywhere with me where I collect maps, a lighter, a flashlight, a biner, etc. and I'm always putting more useful things in it. It has nothing to do with political alignment and everything to do with individual interests.

Survival requires education, confidence, preparation, action and many other things, but hardly faith, and definitely not in some man in the sky.

There are AMAZING new ideas and technologies that could easily save our world from catastrophe. Perhaps not the Kepler space probe, but future space telescopes are statistically bound to discover perhaps hundreds of earth type planets within the next 10 to 50 year. Think of the psychological effect on the human mind, knowing that hundreds of new homes are waiting right up there in the sky. I believe the excitement of would be Space Pioneers will overwhelm our desire to go to the stars. I believe we will not only go there, but run there! We can do this, we have collective intelligence after all and our near future artificial intelligence self aware computers (try in 15 years) will help us find a way. If we can survive over Stephen Hawking’s 200 years, we will be on our way. I only wish I could join them.

Even twenty years is difficult to predict: who in 1990, aside from maybe some industry insiders, could have predicted the impact of the Internet? Considering that Prof. Hawking put the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963 instead of 1962 (unless he was misquoted in the piece), I'd be as leery of his predictions as of his history: we might have 201 years left as a species!

Comments like that just seem to eschew the logic that he's known for. Why would a presumably million-year old civilization bother to conquer and enslave us? You'd have to assume that any race THAT mature would have worked out all of its internal problems before venturing into the stars. It'd probably exist in a completely different dimension anyway.

The validity of the assumption come from the experiences on the planet called earth. We humans, tends to devour and enslave everything which comes in contact with us. The clash of the civilizations had been obesrved since the dark ages of medo-persians, babylonias, egyptians, romans and the civilizations that followed after including invasion of Europeans in Americas, Africa and Asia which led to extinction, slavery and colonization just to name a few.

Would it be logical to assume that the other higher intelligent (and or civilized) life form would act the same way as we humans do in this planet? I don't know but my guess is it is better to be safe than sorry.

My point is that we probably shouldn't base what other intelligent life might be like off ourselves. The human race is young; we're probably not even in our teens yet. We have potential and overall, our species is incuriably optimistic (just like a child's), but it'd be like saying that just because one child sometimes gets out of control, all adults must act that way too.
The fairest assumption to make about alien life is that they might not be humanoid at all, or on a Lovecraftian note, not even fully aware of us. That, to me, is infinitely more likely (and possibly more terrifying) than one or two UFOs out of Independence Day that could raze the White House, the Kremlin, Downey Street, et al. with a laser beam. He may not be as famous as Hawking, but I'd trust Michio Kaku's assessment infinitely more. Here it is if you're interested.

    • Currently, I don't really care about what Mr. Hawking has to say unless I can see a conclusive basis for that prediction.

If you read further in the post of the link, the post says that Hawking recommends we inhabit another planet to save the human race. That's a pretty idiotic recommendation. If humans are just as negligible of the environment there as they are here, then humans will be doomed for destruction there as well. The solution is to learn how to properly take care of our environment. The solution is not to continuously destroy other environments until there are none left.

It would help too if people would stop ruining the lives of others for pleasure or profit. We could be kinder and more thoughtful? Of course, for a good amount of humanity, they will just die to get something better. That plan though doesn't really help those of us that they are leaving behind them still living here on Earth. Many, the same people they created and condemned to a life here on this planet. People need to take more responsibility for their actions and the things that they say.
