The ad has already earned some raves from eco-minded bloggers. Good says the ad's "irreverence is perfectly tuned." Ecorazzi notes that it ends in an "Awww."
BrandChannel notes that the ad was launched on Thursday's National Football League opener, and says the ad takes a tiny bit of political license:
It's interesting, too, that for the ad, Nissan positioned Leaf in a driveway, untethered - not in a garage where it's actually likely to be found each morning, connected by a cord to an electrical outlet, when an owner leaves the house to get into the vehicle for the commute.

Electric vehicles are not emission free---they simply move the emissions from the vehicle to the power plant smoke stacks.
From an environmental standpoint, we'd be better off by getting rid of the coal powered electrical plants.
It does us no good at all to get rid of gasoline cars and substitute electric cars that get their power from coal. It will only add more environmental destruction to what we already have.

Dear god if this doesn't piss me off like no other...
I used to think electric cars were going to save our asses... and then I pulled my head out of my own.
Building a car with a highly toxic battery in it and then shipping it overseas is definitely no solution to climate change. In fact... cars in general are a completely broken paradigm. We need global/public transportation. Maglev trains driven by solar power, trolleys, trains, gondolas, whatever. This, along with cities that are actually designed with public transportation in mind, could kick climate change right in the plums.
The energy inefficiency of each person owning a vehicle is staggering. The energy required to mine, refine, mold, bolt, prime and paint steel is stupefying. Also... electric cars STILL RUN ON OIL... because most energy comes from oil.
We need smarter cities, and less people driving. Period.
As we speak, my car sits in the fucking driveway wasting away. Losing it's value every day, too. I refuse to wash it because that would be a waste of water. It's just a waste and it's incredibly hard to get rid of.
Anyone buying a new car these days is a fucking asshole. Plain and simple. You want to make a difference? Ride the damn bus.

I think it is just a little too emotional for me, but I have been waiting for a full electric car for some time now. Maybe 15 years from now when the economy turns around I will actually be able to afford one.

Well, you better equip your house with solar panels before you buy it, or you're still burning coal. Not to mention the fact that the battery in the Nissan Leaf is baically an upfront carbon footprint, since the process of making it is highly toxic... and disposing of it is near impossible without a major environmental impact.
Electric cars are not the answer. I used to think they were. We need smarter cities and better public transportation. The world of the future can't have 9 billion people all trying to get around in separate vehicles that run on energy from coal plants, can they? Our population gets higher, and more people get cars, which means more traffic, which means more waste, etc. etc.
Also... here's a quote about the Leaf's battery:
"At issue is the fact that the LEAF uses air cooling for its batteries, while Tesla uses a superior liquid heating/cooling thermal management solution. By opting for the cheaper air cooling, Musk says Nissan's battery temperatures will be "all over the place". Worse yet, he says that they will undergo "huge degradation" at colder temperatures, and literally "shut off" at warmer ones. Competitor GM has stated that its 2011 Chevy Volt EV may have similar issues."
and if COST is the issue, then check this out:
"The Nissan LEAF costs $32,780k and is supposed to have a 42 kWh battery pack and 100 mi range. 80,000 miles means 800 recharges. It can be charged to full in 20 hours @ 120 V and 20 Amps, which is 48 kWh (87.5% charging efficiency). To get the overnight electricity rates, you will need the 8 hour 240 V 40 Amp charger (54.7% charging efficiency) which consumes 76.8 kWh to charge the pack. At $0.06/kWh, 800 charges to full will cost you $3686.40.
Looking at similar compact gasoline cars, I'll compare to the Civic since it's the most popular car in the size class, expensive (helps the LEAF out in the comparison), and gets about average gas mileage for the class. 25 city, 36 highway, call it 30 MPG average. Costs $16,255. Over 80,000 miles it will burn 2667 gallons, which at $3 gal will cost $8000.
So @ 80k miles, the LEAF has cost you $32,780 + $3686.40 = $36,466. The Civic has cost you $16255 + $9600 = $25,855. It's only after you factor in the $7500 federal tax credit, a $1500 state tax credit, and factor in $3000 for maintenance costs on the Civic that the break-even point is at 80k miles."
Don't buy the bullshit! Riding the bus is still better than making an investment with these asshole companies trying to sell you salvation in pandora's box.

exactly. electricity is not clean if it is produced from coal or nuclear power.

Just do a little research and you'll see that its still a less wasteful then your full gas or hybrid. Even if its using coal its still 30mpg vs 300 mpg with the full eletric, and in some places you can opt for wind and solar energy, we just need to demand it more and start the green economy!

yes getting better mpg is better, but i think everyone needs to think about how all of this stuff really works before just jumping on the bandwagon. solar power would be great but it seems to be a long time off. wind power is popular but not without its cons. windmills are kind of ugly, and they kill a ton of birds. check this out http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203706604574376543308399048.html

You know what's even LESS wasteful than that? Supporting clean(er) public transportation!
Population grows, more cars on the road, more traffic, more emissions, etc. It's not just the waste of GAS... it's the waste of resources. Does each man and woman need several tons of steel ( a nonrenewable resource that requires tons of energy just to mine and refine. Not to mention toxic paint, primer, flux, etc ) in their driveway just for them? No. You can't possibly, ever, in any way, make it sustainable for each person on the planet, or even 1/4, to own a car. If our cities were built just with bike travel in mind (like many European cities) then we'd already be better off... but think of cities that are designed geometrically superior to those of today... using advanced public transportation systems like maglev trains (that are already used in Japan)... then run them on solar power and "Bam!", problem solved.
On a side note, there are several non-toxic versions of steel that require less energy to make and have higher tensile strength. The factories aren't set up for them and infrastructure already has a hold on the market, though. So they stay in the dark.
Electric cars are not the answer in any way, at all. The paradigm is broken.
