The idea for a 'log in location' services online started with apps like foursquare, but to keep updated against other social networks and keep users happy, websites like Facebook are adopting these ideas.
"Places comes with its own settings to control how much information you’re sharing (they’re in the “Things others share” section of your privacy settings), but options like the ability to check your friends in without their permission are likely to bear the brunt of the anti-Facebook brigade’s ire"-Independent

I really don't like the idea of people knowing where I am 24/7... I think I'll have to pass thanks.

Forget taking the cat to the vet. I'm thinking Cat Burglars. Now they know when you'll be out so they can do you a favour and nick your lap top denying Facebook the chance to tell the world where you are. Bad idea. I'm not using it. Why does anyone need it?

Why the hell has this been set to opt in by default, has Zuckerberg learnt nothing?!
If you access FB via your mobile device and *do not* want the world to know where you are ...
(1) click ACCOUNT > PRIVACY SETTINGS > CUSTOMISE SETTINGS
(2) CHANGE 'Places I check in to' to CUSTOM and CHANGE 'Make visible to' to 'ONLY ME'.
(3) SAVE Setting
(4) UNCHECK the BOX 'Include me in "People here and now" after I check in'
(5) DONE!Also whilst in Privacy Settings > Customise Settings, scroll down to the options under the header 'Things Others Share' and find 'Friends can check me in to Places'. EDIT Settings and change this to DISABLED.
This will stop Friends (accidentally) logging you back in to the Places feature.
Normal service has been resumed.

You love the new feature, fine. I just wish I had been given the choice instead of forcing a new feature (which isn't an improvement or security fix) and automatically opting me in without consent. Not a lot to ask is it?
