185 gallons of water, two tons of soil, 5,000-9,000 cubic feet of natural gas, and 170 pounds of greenhouse gases make one barrel of crude oil.

JanforGore:
Natural gas is measured in cubic feet, not gallons.
A cubic foot of natural gas contains 900 BTU of energy.
A barrel of crude oil produces about 22 gallons of gasoline.
Gasoline contains about 114,000 BTU per gallon.
900 X 9000 = 8.1 million BTU
114,000 X 22 = 2.5 million BTU
We would have over 3 times the amount of energy to power our vehicles if we use natural gas to run them instead of gasoline from tar sands. And no water usage or strip mining.
Tar sands are just plain stupid.
