GPS shoes are coming to a retailer near you. Why in the world would anyone want a GPS tracker in their shoes, you ask? Generally, they don't, if they know about it.

The GPS shoe was developed to monitor the location of Alzheimer's patients who wander away and get lost. Alzheimer's or other dementia patients tend to remove other devices such as anklet/bracelet type monitoring devices as they see them as unfamiliar, according to Andrew Carle of George Mason U. 's College of Health and Human Services in USA Weekend.

Shoes, on the other hand, remain a part of the Alzheimer's victim's "procedural memory." In other words, they remember to wear shoes. With the number of Alzheimer's patients expected to quadruple in the next 40 years, a GPS shoe could be a godsend to caregivers of dementia patients who wander.

But lets think about this for a minute, shall we? The manufacturers of these GPS shoes have a potential marketing blockbuster on their hands if they handle it right. What other uses could there possibly be for these "track" shoes?

Have an unruly teenager? Know their whereabouts day and night. Errant husband or wife? Know where that cheating so-and-so is at any given moment. Want to know when the boss is coming? Give him GPS shoes for his birthday. The possibilities are endless.

The cost of peace of mind doesn't come cheaply, however. Priced between $250 and $300, plus a monthly connection fee of $25 to $50, you have to really, really want to keep track of someone.

GPS shoes are currently available from Aetrex, in retailers around the country, as well as online. Just think, the holidays are right around the corner.
