Conservatives on Juan Williams: Don't diss The Jews! But Muslims? Eh, no problem

If there's one outcome of the Juan Williams firing that should surprise no one, it's that the right has jumped to his defense and condemned the desecration of his first amendment rights by the evil left-wing NPR.

But what many of these conservative pundits have forgotten is how they sang a slightly different tune when certain other journalists were let go for making comments that offended the right.

Let's take a look back...

Just a few weeks ago, Bill O'Reilly defended CNN's decision to fire Rick Sanchez, since the network "sells their credibility as a hard news organization" and Sanchez "is supposedly representing CNN."

Cliff May wrote on the National Review's "The Corner" blog that "NPR has its own interpretation of sharia, and Juan violated it -- and paid the price."

As for Helen Thomas, May wrote a letter to Hearst calling for the news organization to "cut all ties with her as quickly as possible" because her "outburst of unbridled anti-Semitism makes it clear that she sides with those who see a second Holocaust as a 'final solution.'"

Bill O'Reilly decried the Williams firing on Fox News today, calling it "outrageous." He continued:

Of course, no controversy would be complete without a Sarah Palin tweet, which she provided today:

NPR defends 1st Amendment Right, but will fire u if u exercise it. Juan Williams: u got taste of Left's hypocrisy, they screwed up firing you

But about the Helen Thomas controversy, she (a touch incomprehensibly) tweeted:

Helen Thomas press pals condone racist rant?Heaven forbid"esteemed"press corps represent society's enlightened elite;Rest of us choose truth

    • I was just wondering if Juan would have said on the radio what he said on FUX News? It seems to me these guys and gals opinions differ depending on the news outlet they are on. For example: a couple weeks ago I saw FUX News contributer Judge Napolitano on C-SPAN talking about Pres. Bush's illegal wiretaping and he said in the interview that Bush, Cheney and Ashcroft should have all been brought up on charges and thrown in jail! Would he have said that on FUX & Friends, O'Rally Report or Blanndity? I doubt it. I think he expressed his true opinion on C-SPAN cause C-SPAN is way, way, way above the intellect of your common FUX News viewer.

      That's an interesting observation.

Perhaps these people really are just actors following specific scripts for their respective shows. It would be disconcerting though huh?

    • You have the right to say whatever you want; but not on company time, or while you're representing that company. Williams couldn't get that right and was asked not to be referred to as an NPR Contributor the first time. That's is what should be considered a warning. When you're supposed to be representing a "balanced" view, you don't factor in personal experiences that can make you look and sound like a bigot. There are many ways he could have handled that situation and kept his job. Williams put his foot in his bigot mouth and got canned for it only to be hired immediately by Faxed News, so don't cry too hard for him.

Sanchez was fired for calling Jon Stewart a "bigot", and "that CNN and the other networks are all run by Jewish people." Thomas was fired for saying that Jewish people should go "home" to Germany and Poland instead of occupying Israel. I don't disagree with any of these three decisions, even to fired respected reporters such as Thomas and Williams, because journalism used to have something in the past called "integrity", which means you didn't spew such stupidity as these statements. I don't really get the outrage on the right; people get canned for saying stupid shit on the air. I would say the Right Wing should try it sometime, but Faxed News would only be able to air commercials 24/7 if it did.

Nope I am a Malaysian Indian, practicing Hinduism. I am surrounded by Muslims and they don't treat me or any other non-muslims like shit as you think. Also we don't have extremely crazy right-wing nutbags like in the USA.

crystalman calls me a racist, yet I am not the one proposing that we make Jews or anyone else go through a seperate line at the airport.

Hey crystalman how about yellow crescent and stars for them as they go through the airport?

Sorry crystalman I don't think don't that we need to adopt your racist policies and police state measures to be safe like they do in your homeland.

He actively promotes racist Jim Crow-like measures for American Muslims though, no matter if they are innocent So who's the racist?

Here is what's coming your way if people like crystalman gets their way and we adopt more of Israel's aiport security measures like forced checkpoints and naked body scanners.

"Israeli security forces black performer with a Muslim name to dance

JERUSALEM — A performer with the famed Alvin Ailey dance troupe on Tuesday said he was twice forced to perform steps for Israeli airport security officers to prove his identity before he was permitted to enter the country.

Abdur-Rahim Jackson, an eight-year veteran of the dance ensemble, said he was singled out by Israel’s renowned airport security because he has a Muslim name. He called the experience embarrassing and said at one point, one of the officers even suggested he change his name.

“To be greeted like this because of my name, it took me back a little bit,” said Jackson, who is black.

Israel is the first stop on a six-nation tour celebrating the New York-based dance company’s 50th anniversary. Earlier this year, Congress passed a resolution calling the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater a “vital American cultural ambassador to the world.”

Jackson said he was pulled aside from other members of the troupe when they arrived at Israel’s international airport on Sunday night. He said he was taken to a holding room, where he was asked about the origins of his name. When he explained he was part of the dance group, he was asked to perform.

“I stood up. I asked what type of dance?” he explained. “He said, “Just do anything.’ I just moved around.”

Minutes later, he said a female officer put him through a similar interrogation and asked him to dance again.

Jackson said he received his name because his father was a convert to Islam. Jackson said he was not raised a Muslim, does not consider himself religious and is engaged to a Jewish woman in the troupe who has relatives in Israel.

Jackson said he did not plan to press the matter further, saying the numerous apologies he has received from American dignitaries and his Israeli hosts is “enough for me.” The Israel Ports Authority said it had no comment because it did not receive a formal complaint.

The incident was reported in Israel’s largest newspaper and on an Israeli television news and interview program. “The security guards should be sent home or (the airport) will become a mental asylum,” said Motti Kirshenbaum, a veteran commentator and host of the Channel 10 TV program.

Israel is constantly on the alert for attack because of the Israel-Palestinian conflict and extremist Islamic rejection of the Jewish state’s existence. Security is strict at all entry points and inside the country.

Israel is famous for the effectiveness of its airport security. But a key element in its security checks is ethnic profiling. The practice has been criticized by Israeli human rights campaigners as racist because it singles out Arabs for tougher treatment.

I've got one question for crystalman:

Who fired Juan Williams for his honest opinons of being afraid of Muslims and a coward when he flies on airplanes, as ridiculous as that is?

Was it a Arab Muslim terrorist who fired Juan Williams or was it the president of NPR, Vivian Luisa Schiller, who is obviously from a tribe that is not of Arab Muslim origin.

      Give me an answer.

    • The fact of the matter is everybody in the media is kind of missing the point on this whole thing. You can't really compare Helen Thomas to Juan Williams, because while they seem like and should be two very similar instances, they are, unfortunately, not.

Thomas made anti-Semitic comments and got fired, Williams made anti-Muslim comments and got fired. Both deserved to get fired because it is understandable that their respective news organizations did not want to be associated with the negative opinions of their reporters. These were not a First Amendment issues, they were business decisions.

The difference is that since the September 11th terrorist attacks there is a large percentage of the American (and world) population that stereotypically associates all Muslims with terrorism. While this is as a gross a generalization as "all black people are gang members," "all Jews are greedy," and "all Latin-Americans are illegal immigrants," it is, unlike these aforementioned generalizations, widely believed and tolerated by a significant percentage of the population. That tolerance of this generalization is echoed in and used to the advantage of conservative media outlets and some conservative politicians to make points about largely unrelated topics like the left's "political correctness," because it's good for riling people up and making them forget about real issues (the left is guilty of similar things but not in regards to Muslims).

The real difference between Thomas and Williams is that most people don't agree (or at least will say they don't agree) with Thomas's comments about Jews, but a lot of people (in my opinion, unfortunately) agree with Williams's comments about Muslims. There is a huge double standard, but a huge chunk of the population simply doesn't care and feels completely justified in not caring.

a double standard in our public perception, but not in actions.both are jackass's, we as people just dont see it.
if you watch fox, williams is the victim.
if you watch msncbs helen was a victim
when in reality they both were guilty of using free speech to victimize others

    • And the weird thing is- the right wingers are blatantly and obviously hypocritical while calling the left hypocrites.

How is it that they think they can get away with this?

Oh yes- the only people left who vote Republican have an IQ under 80.

    • I noticed the article did not address the Nina Tottenberg wish that Jesse Helms and his grandchildren contract AIDS. Look, if your trying to say that it isn't just the liberals I agree. The problem is, very often on this board, it's never the liberals.
The Juan Williams dust up is a prime example that the left is NOT tolerant of any ideas other than their own. I have said this for years. I agree with Williams about 5% of the time but NPR was wrong. I'm glad Fox News picked him up. I find it funny that the hated Fox gave him a job, a liberal. I cannot think of a better example of the control the left wants to exercise and why that group is NOT suited, and so dangerous, for this country. They represent control and hatred. Not Fox, not those of us who believe in the supremacy of the individual over the state, not those of us who believe in individual freedom, but liberalism. THAT is our real enemy.

FOX hired Juan Williams for good ratings due to this controversy, and also because he was already a FOX regular. It's just good business and has nothing to do with free speech, and if you're willing to smear those evil MOOOZLEMS, hey, all the better. Welcome aboard!

Plus now with another lefty on deck, FOX can even tout their "Fair and Balanced" mantra even louder.

The point of this post is that, in this particular instance, the conservative (the neo-con) right has clearly demontrated a double standard with regards to criticism of free speech issues involving Muslims and Jews.

For the media neo-cons, it is ok to criticize Muslims, but criticizing Israel and Jews...no way that's just crossing the line. It's beyond the pale.

    • So when does NPR fire the opinionated twit, NPR CEO Vivian Schiller, who went on the public airwaves in a blatant yet lame attempt to marginalize Mr.Williams while she attacking his character with her private opinion expressed in public. The only 'stupid, phobic' thing about this whole episode is the stupid, phobic way the extremist left wing of a major political entity has reacted to Mr. Williams comments taken entirely out of context due to the fact he is affiliated with a new organization they all fear or disagree with. All Federal, State, and local government funding to the propaganda wing of the Progressive wing of the Democratic Party known as NPR needs to be cut off immediately. George Soros has enough money to fund a propaganda outlet, I suggest they ask that politically misguided misogynist for the balance of the funds that will be lost when public funding of this sham organization is finally ended.

I disagree with you calling NPR a "sham". It has some great far left socialist opinions that are important to hear. Just like It's important to hear the far right. I'm surprised there aren't more comments on this story. It's important to me. Something about it feels wrong. Juan is an intelligent, important voice for the left on NPR and FOX. His firing for an honest opinion was surprising. I feel maybe a reprimand and a statement would have been fine. For the NPR CEO to make a stupid smart ass remark about "saving his opinion for his psychiatrist" was disturbing. It was unprofessional at minimum. If he made the same remarks about Christians nobody would even be discussing it right now. It would be a non story. I wonder if the ACLU will help Juan out. We'll see.

now he works for fox - the world leader in selling fear to the american people. good luck with that.
thinking this has anything to do with freedom of expression is as stupid as expecting john mccain to be a maverick.

Lie, lie big and lie all the time.

If you get caught in a lie, lie more. Don't apologize and feign outrage and despair over how you're being treated.

They've been doing this since Nixon, it really shouldn't surprise anyone at this point.

The only real question is whether this a deliberate rhetorical strategy or if their egos are just so fucked up that they refuse to believe that they even make mistakes, let alone own up to them.
