Thief caught in action on Google's Street View?

It has been condemned as a “burglar’s paradise map” making it too easy for criminals to find easy homes to loot, but now Google’s Street View could actually help solve a crime.

The Street View car managed to snap a clear picture of a man believed to be in the process if stealing a Derbyshire family’s caravan that was parked in their driveway.

The balding stocky man was recorded on the driveway of the Soanes family’s home, with a green 4x4 that police suspect was used to tow away their £12,000 caravan.

It was the family’s 11-year-old son Reuben who stumbled upon the potential evidence while surfing the site to find an image of the family’s detached home.

However, it is unclear if Google have saved the original picture with the registration plate un-blurred, and if so, whether it will provide the information to police or not.

The caravan was stolen in Linton in the summer of 2009 and the theft took place sometime between 0930 BST and 1400 BST on 5 June.

It is thought the Street View car could have been passing shortly before the theft, and officers want to hear from anyone who recognises the man.
