US government anti-WikiLeaks fervor may lead to Internet crackdown

maasanova
Vague new regulations are being drafted by the Obama administration which would make it easier for the government to spy on Internet communications, including email, social media, general Web sites and mobile phones. Obama hopes to require all devices with online communications to be made with a build in ability to comply with a wiretap order.

Investigative journalist Wayne Madsen argued the US is entering a point where the US PATRIOT Act may soon include digging through ones’ Internet and mobile phone use, further impeding American Constitutional freedoms and an open Internet.

“You’ve got people like Senator Joe Lieberman from Connecticut who is chairman of the house Homeland Security Committee calling for an investigation of the New York Time for publishing the WikiLeaks cables,” he said. “It’s too bad that in this country idiocy by our public officials is not a crime. Because, if it were Joe Lieberman would probably be doing 20 years to life in prison for it.”

    • One of the things that makes the Internet popular is the freedom it provides, in mostly in terms of expression and information. Most of the secrets Wikileaks is leaking can be boiled down to international gossip.

This entire catalyst could have been avoided if the government did like my grandma always told me: "If you can't say [or do] anything nice, don't say [or do] anything at all."

    • America was always the worlds protector, the bad guys feared us and they knew if they do something wrong America would be there to check them out, there was accountability... we cant lose that! good people around the world always knew that they could out run their bad governments by coming to America and that we would accept them with open arms, but if America turns bad then the world will not have anyone and lots of people will suffer.

We as a country are a lot better then this, shit started falling apart ever sense Bush was elected, we have to get back to basic and we cant wait for the government to make things better, get up and get to work, start building something, be creative! Be American!

If we come together and live free like people have been in this country and innovating things, it will be okay, keep standing up for whats right, its the small things that matter.

Open up you own bank with a few friends, get a thousand partners, everyone chip in some money and open a business so you whole city can benefit.

      Do something

america never took the poor and downtrodden ! they took the best and the brightest and some poor people for good measure . they even took the worst nazi criminals , when they had agreed not too ! so scared that russia may be better then them . all america ever done they did out if fear ! and dont get me wrong ; my country is not much better, we have war crimes too , but at least we didnt give them amnesty and put them in front of the gun squad ! or hanged them ! or put them in jail . since 1945 law has been raped continuesly for the betterment of the u.s . and then the u.s wonders why they have enemy's . of course this has been done without the people knowing or caring . prijedor your freedom is an ilusion in america . like it is in the rest of the world now . i would want us all to be free , realy free ! to live where you want to, to think what you want , etc now you only have some freedom if you are a miljonair or better !! and if you are poor there is no freedom to be had anywhere .

    • If you think for one second that homeland security or the nsa is not checking your emails and reading your myspace, or watching your txt messages you are a fool. They already listen to all your calls, unless your a Qwest customer, then they cannot listen in because qwest refused said it was an invasion of privacy. the point is big brother has been watching for some time and the patriot act just made it legal.

the patriot act is just a licence to violate your rights as a human being ! it is pitiful how scared the average american is of muslims . of people who are different then they are . you should be more scared of your neighbour who sits at home with his .45 scared out of his mind and shoots the paperboy !!!

    • much like we grew to accept getting felt up at airports and armed soldiers in the streets of new york, we will sadly roll over and accept whatever cyber rods the powers that be ram up our collective asses. the time is now for civil disobedince. stand up for yourselves, even if it leads to incarceration. that is the only way at this point. our only weapons are numbers and the truth and we must use them both to our advantage

    • I believe that the words of Alan Watts about nature and human nature are more relevant today than ever. The United States has lost trust in our citizens and in the internet. It's a very dark path leaders take when they don't trust their people.

    • I don't know. From what I've seen around the internet, if it's something that a person created, someone else will find a way around it. Hell, there's even talks of making something similar to the internet but be purely P2P. I think it was posted here sometime ago.

    • Now , I am MORE than disappointed with Obama , I am disgusted . Freedom of information and free speech are vital to healthy civilization . Without them , you have Fascism . I am guessing , but I thing the 99% of humanity that does the living , working , and dying on this planet , does NOT want Fascism . They want the truth and transparency in the governments .
