Mashable reported on the latest Twitter account hack, which would cause accounts to spam links to friends. If a user would click on the link, their account would become hacked and then send spam out too.
However, later in the day a tweet went out claiming teh Twitter hack was connected to the Anonymous attack on Gawker, where passwords and accounts details were stolen and uploaded on sites. Gawker linked to a story criticising wikileaks.
Many of the user accounts swiped from Gawker used the same passwords for different accounts like emails and twitter.
"Update: According to TweetStats/TweepSearch/RowFeeder creator Damon Cortesi, it seems likely that the spam is coming from already-compromised accounts, rather than malicious code from the “acainews” links.
Update 2: According to Twitter’s Del Harvey, the attack is likely related to a recent attack against Gawker that compromised 1.3 million commenter accounts. We’ve also found similarities between the compromised Gawker database and the compromised Twitter accounts. The recommended course of action is to change your Twitter password."-Mashable
