The toxic five: Why are they still in our food? - Inspirational interview with Dr Shiv Chopra

JanforGore
In 1998 and 1999, former Health Canada scientist, Dr Shiv Chopra, along with two co-workers, Drs. Margaret Haydon and Gerard Lambert, testified to the Canadian Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry that they were pressured by senior supervisors to approve drugs of questionable safety, including the genetically engineered cattle drug, Bovine Growth Hormone (rBST) – then produced by Monsanto and Eli Lilly.

In return for their whistleblowing, the scientists were fired from their government positions.

Since then, Chopra has been an outspoken critic of corporate agriculture and its pocket regulators. In this interview by natural health advocate Dr Joseph Mercola, Chopra discusses the five toxic elements of the food supply that should be banned immediately. GM foods are one of them. Chopra also talks inspiringly and from practical experience about how ordinary people can reclaim the food production system from the control of the corporations.

    • Very simple answer... so that our kids can have more issues and the pharmaceutical companies can produce more drugs to "fix" them.

Ever wonder why our "ADD", "ADHD" and other bullshit symptoms are not recognized in other countries? Because they don't allow steroids and all the other shit they put into the foods here.

This is one, not the only one, but one of a few countries that allow steroids and lots of additives added to our foods, that's OK'd by the FDA....

More drugs, more "ADHD" more pharmaceutical "wonders"..... the Great US of A.

Well also, the top companies that now comprise agribusiness were once the top poison makers during the last two world wars. They simply took their poisons from the battlefields to the fields where our food is grown in order to maximize their profits. Instead of killing quickly, they kill slowly over generations. Bayer, Monsanto, BASF, all manufacturers of death.

Here is a clear recent example of corporate profits and lobbying taking precedence over public interest and health:

"In an 11th-hour move, Governor Schwarzenegger's Department of Pesticide Regulation has approved methyl iodide for use in strawberry fields. This chemical is a potent carcinogen and neurotoxin.

The decision flies in the face of overwhelming public and scientific opposition. Prior to the decision, the DPR saw its largest public comment period ever, with 53,000 comments, most of them urging the state to ban the pesticide. But in the end, lobbying and media campaign by Arysta LifeScience -- the company that manufactures methyl iodide -- persuaded the DPR to put corporate interests ahead of public health.

Now is the time to double down. In January, Governor-Elect Jerry Brown will take office, and he will have the power to issue an immediate moratorium on methyl iodide. He can also reconvene the review committee and direct the DPR to actually listen to their scientific recommendations this time.

The science on this chemical speaks for itself. Methyl iodide is a known carcinogen, neurotoxin and thyroid toxicant. It induces late-term miscarriages and damages developing fetuses in laboratory animals. Fumigating fields with the gas -- even with the strictest regulations -- would no doubt still result in unacceptable exposures to farmworkers and surrounding populations.

DPR approved the chemical despite a report from its own independent panel of scientists declaring that "methyl iodide is a highly toxic chemical and we expect that any anticipated scenario for the agricultural or structural fumigation use of this agent would result in exposures to a large number of the public and thus would have a significant adverse impact to public health."

This is a clear instance of corporate influence over-riding science and the public interest. Governor-Elect Brown needs to take a public stance against methyl iodide and make a moratorium one of his first priorities in office."

Jan, Thank you for posting the link to www.panna.org.

Both, www.panna.org and, www.fooddemocracynow.org are both - Giant Steps Forward. Both now with the power and efficiency of sending millions of letters from Citizens to our Government with one click of a mouse! A powerful internet tool to use to facilitate a much needed voice of millions of citizens to mandate their will directly to the Legislators and Government Leaders making decisions in our name. That didn't exist a few years ago.

I am already a member of both... Jan, combining those platforms with "janforgore" creates an efficient platform providing an even much larger and needed voice of public opinion to your platform and to current's platform. The power of using networking...

Now the only thing is... left is seeing if my "Governor Jerry Brown" proves his worth as a Citizen's advocate and a progressive leader, by doing the right thing. Actions speak much louder than words, as we've experienced with President Obama.

My motto is always give people enough opportunity to do the right thing... or, enough rope to hang themselves by their own actions or lack ~ there of...

Jan, thanks again for posting the link to www.panna.org !

      All the Best,

      Gerard

We dont let a bunch of rats run around, we poison them and keep their numbers down that way so they dont over populate... us humans are way way over populated so now we have to poison us so we can cut down the population. I do want to see human population go down but in a different way, not poisoning our food, BUT at the same time I see why it has to be done

    • great interview. I learned about much of this a decade ago in harrowing detail when I picked up Robert Cohen's "Milk: The Deadly Poison". Monsanto is as evil as Darth Vader. I was already a vegetarian at that point. but since reading about rBGH and IGF-1 and the collusion between the FDA and USDA with corporations like Monsanto... I had to give up milk, ice cream. I still eat some cheese though... but sparingly. but even soy and almond milk alternatives aren't all organic. Sadly about 95% of what is stocked in our grocery stores is all carcinogenic.

    • Great Post Jan!

Our Corporate Food & Government System reminds me of this Joke...

      [ Begin Joke ]

Mussolini is sitting at the dinner table with his family.

His little son (not even sure if he had one, but this is joke, anyway) asks .

      Daddy, what is fascism?

Mussolini answers - Sit quietly and eat.

      [End of Joke]

Food Corporate and Government Fascism... has no Consciences.

telling all of us to: " Sit quietly and eat."

      Mussolini also proudly said:

" Fascism should be appropriately called Corporatism because of a merger of State & Corporate Power."

That is the criminal act that is going on here... "Fascism"

It will take "every one of us" to stop these crimes being committed and prosecute the guilty and get control of our government back from the corporations.

That is where the problem lies...

It is time for everyone to act courageously... Because, what is going on today is totally unacceptable and most of the actions promoting these activities are CRIMINAL and are prosecutable.

Dr Shiv Chopra is a great man and an inspiration to all of us... Showing people everywhere that we all can fight for change and a better future.

      Thank you Jan...

This is a very inspiring post to begin a new year.

    • Well sure, sick people are big business for pharmaceutical companies as well, as he relates to. It is all one big conglomerate of greed and corruption.

      From the link:

How a Scientist Can Be Pressured to Relinquish His Ethical Obligation

So, how exactly does this manipulation work?

      Dr. Chopra explains:

"At every election time, the pharmaceutical companies, slaughterhouses, all these mega companies get together and bring pressure on the politicians, because they make political donations and so forth… And there are registered lobbyists who even get jobs inside the cabinets -- like Michael Taylor at the U.S. FDA.

There were people like that in Canada as well, working in the Minister of Health's office and pressuring, "Where is this product?" It's that kind of pressure, [it's an] incestuous relationship between corporations and the government.

The public just assumes that government is looking after them; they assume everything is alright. If an individual scientist like me blows the whistle, everybody gangs up and say, "He's not a team player. He's a troublemaker. Get rid of him."

I have letters documented in my book, showing how the companies wrote to the Minister of Health; how they went to the Privy Council; how they went to the Prime Minister saying "Fire Shiv Chopra, and fire whoever stands with him."

That's how the three of us were fired. That is the kind of power these companies have."

I believe these toxins are still in our food because those who actively
put them there, and those they are in league with who passively allow
them there, know the score: That chronic sickness & premature death
are BIG MONEY. It doesn't appear to matter to such a negative mentality
that it's people who create wealth. And that the best investment they can
possibly make is to foster health education & wellness from the earliest
grades. Because they understand they and their related industries who
are parasitic & predatorial won't collect nearly as much money. Not does
it matter to them that they are undermining the value of the money they
collect. So long as they can collect staggering amounts, I'm certain they
believe it will outpace even hyperinflation, so they still collect big bucks.

Honest business math represents a reasonable arithmetic progression.
Crooked business math represents a geometric progression. When you
combine the deadly factors of poisoned food & hyperinflated " health
care costs " , unless an individual educates themselves they haven't a
chance against the food industry Corporate TV mind control and the
" food pyramid " that Food Inc. tells the FDA to diseminate for them.
      I was lucky. Since I graduated from the S.U.of N.Y. in 1972, I've had a
keen interest in natural health science, and have collected a mini library
on lots of food/medicine items. And topics of interest from Co Q 10 to
Iridology. Being the grandson of a farmer, with an aunt & uncle who had
a farm helped me gain an appreciation for God's Nature. As my learning
the practice of organic farming at home, and Mendel's genetics in school.
Why are these toxins in our food ? Why other than the 7 deadly sins: GREED !
