Betelgeuse is a dying star. It's reached the end of the line and currently in the terminal throes of shedding vast bubbles of gas into space. Betelgeuse is a red supergiant star and it's so massive that it will detonate as a supernova.

Well, nobody knows how it will affect our solar system, just imagine explosion of the star which is 200 million times bigger then sun... maybe we'll get some radiation? :) well, lets follow scientific TV channels at http://www.livepage.info or bbc.co.uk etc, and wait with interest for that beautiful explosion event!
