Why chatting too long on Facebook can get ANYONE DEPRESSED

'Texting, instant messaging and social networking make it very easy for adolescents to become even more anxious, which can lead to depression.' Teenage friends have always chatted about their problems, asking each other why a boy didn't call or if they should break up with a boyfriend, she added.

But frequently discussing the same problem can intensify into an unhealthy activity for those who use Facebook and other electronic means to obsess about it, she said.Dr Davila and her colleague Lisa Starr, at Stony Brook University in New York, interviewed 83 girls aged around 13 - the age when their risk of depression starts to increase.

    • Another factor that they have not taken into account is the fact that on these sites lurks scum bags like dirty old men as well who pretend to be younger with false profiles and promises. This article only targets teenagers. Lots of brain washing. Enough to make anyone depressed.

    • A study based on 83 girls? Anyone who studies psychology or sociology knows that a study on so few individuals is pretty much worthless. Talking about bad things frequently makes you sadder? Shocking! There are far too many factors such as family history, nature of the support group, substance use, etc. that need to be taken into account before claiming that this filler news story is based on credible information

    • I agree with this study as would Social Workers and Journalists who deal with repetitive depressive topics day in and day out and end up in burn out mode. Many subjects discussed on FB manifest and those who post the discussions maybe need a balance and instead of making the topic manifest get out into the community and do something about it. Have other positive hobbies that get them away from those issues.

Sadly those who suffer from depression and social phobias often need to use FB as a safe means of communication with the outside World. I know of many who have benefited from the Social Network and got them selves out after peers have encouraged them on various support pages. Although it becomes a negative habit for some with the addictive games etc, it has also saved lives reunited family and friends.

We have to be careful not to take on board certain research and view either side scrupulously. It may well be a lesson how to use it to our best advantage with out letting it take over our lives. Such as other things including work. Also having those support networks close by to create a balance in our lives.

    • Kids need to shut off their computers and go outside. I'm not that old, but I remember when my evenings were filled with bike rides, fishing, and other outdoor adventures. These days kids seem to be inundated with technology, from computers to cell phones to hand held video games. I doubt they get a fraction of reality that we had not even 20 years ago. There will be consequences!

Indeed. My parents always made me play outside and read. I didn't have a console until I was 17 and my non-school computer time was limited. I feel I am a better person for it and plan on raising my future kids roughly the same way.
