Tiny Spy Planes Could Mimic Birds, Insects

The Pentagon has poured millions of dollars into the development of tiny drones inspired by biology, each equipped with video and audio equipment that can record sights and sounds.
They could be used to spy, but also to locate people inside earthquake-crumpled buildings and detect hazardous chemical leaks.
The smaller, the better.
Besides the hummingbird, engineers in the growing unmanned aircraft industry are working on drones that look like insects and the helicopter-like maple leaf seed.
Researchers are even exploring ways to implant surveillance and other equipment into an insect as it is undergoing metamorphosis. They want to be able to control the creature.

I'm in SD. How would I check that out? A friend of mine who lives by a canyon said he saw a fake hummingbird, but that was only after I told him about the article, plus he's likes whiskey. Lets see the pics!

Yeah this thing was maybe a break through a couple of years ago. Military probably already got a bee spy plane flying around haha.

I really wonder WHY there were press releases about the hummingbird thing.
It's very clever, but extremely obvious, with only a short battery life. They tend only to do this sort of thing for tech that's already been surpassed, so I'm betting they ALREADY have far more advanced little spy cams in operation.
It shouldn't be hard, in terms of miniaturisation that bird is positively the Graff Zeppelin! The only thing remarkable about it is its flight control. - 1 year ago

Maybe a full-time, 24/7 monitor on every citizen is the answer - that includes the big boys and girls as well. Who needs Wiki Leaks?

Funny thing is I was thinking about this the other day. If you wanted to spy on and police your own citizens, using the regular drones is too obvious. You would need to use something that mimics animals. Unless people are looking for it, they probably won't notice the difference.

These things can only fly for about 12 minutes in perfect conditions so it's not very practical to say the least. If you've ever stood near a hummingbird they're actually quite loud and this "bird" does not mimic that. It sounds like an electric airplane.

My 12 year old son bought a remote control helicopter at Walgreen's for $20 that flies for 5 or 6 minutes at a time. Flies maybe 30 minutes before recharging for an hour or two. So, there's no way this is the latest technology.

If some one were to be hunting and shoot down one of these little spy bots would it constitute an attack?

And if we don't stop their Patriot Act intrusions into our constitutionally granted privacies, their surveillances will be buzzing through your bedroom windows. Our sex behind the privacy of our doors may end up going viral, without getting ROYALTIES!!!

No Bailey, you aren't crazy. "they" are. My kid won't be able to get much if anything from Hope and Pell to learn about computers in college, but this kind of big brother shit is ok to spend millions on. Heading on back to the Middle or Dark Ages where there are peons and overlords, except this time it is in a polluted and overpopulated hot world with toxic sludge water and smogged up air and e-coli in the garden from the factory farms!
