GOP leader John Boehner vows to eliminate ‘net neutrality’

Image
treewolf39
Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) vowed Monday to eliminate net neutrality rules recently enacted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), referring to the regulations as a "government takeover of the Internet."

"Right now, freedom and free expression are under attack by a power structure in Washington populated with regulators who have never set foot inside a radio station or a television studio," Rep. Boehner said during a speech at the annual National Religious Broadcasters convention.

"We see this threat in how the FCC is creeping further into the free market by trying to regulate the Internet," the congressman continued. "Network neutrality, they call it. It's a series of regulations that empower the federal bureaucracy to regulate Internet content and viewpoint discrimination. The rules are written vaguely, of course, to allow the FCC free reign."

The regulations, approved by the FCC in December 2010, require internet service providers (ISPs) to allow their customers to have access all legal online content, applications and services over their wired networks and prohibit unreasonable network discrimination.

It is unclear what the FCC considers "reasonable" discrimination and it is likely to make such decisions on a case-by-case basis.

"There is no compromise or middle ground when it comes to protecting our most basic freedoms," Rep. Boehner said, adding that the Republican majority in the House was committed to fighting the new regulations.

“We’re also going to do what we can to see that no taxpayer dollars are used to fund these net neutrality rules," he said.

Rep. Boehner speech came amid a push by House Republicans to overturn the new rules. The Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology announced Sunday that it would hold a vote on a resolution of disapproval to reverse the FCC's Internet regulations.

"It's precautionary," Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), a prominent supporter of net neutrality, told Ars Technica over the weekend. "It's a very clear path if you have paid prioritization, you have a fast lane that content providers can pay for. If that happens, then it's kind of all over."

"So this is about keeping the Internet the way it is," Sen. Franken said. "That's what net neutrality is. It's about maintaining the architecture we have, which has created all this innovation and which doesn't favor the big corporate interests over individuals and small innovators, keeping it the free zone that it is."

    • Boehner doesn't have a hardon for net neutrality to ensure that mom 'n pop bookstores don't get swamped out by the bandwidth demands of marginal technology such as touchpads and 4G. Boehner has a hardon for net neutrality for the usual Neocon Republican reasons: corporations will control what websites and information streams are available either by blocking them or making them crawl so that they are available to the evil empire in much the same way the print media marched in lockstep with Duh-byuh in his runup to war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

    • What's interesting is what Boner says Vs. what's actually going on.
He talks like he's protecting our budget, and our freedom, but in actuality, it's about letting companies install controls to give some sites more bandwidth, and less to anyone else.

It's like being an Advertising company which gives low cost advertising to big companies, and then charges the hell out of small businesses.

Republicans: Protecting big businesses at the expense of the tax pay since 1854.

Again you are uninformed The only reason that the Tea Party or republicans won was because Independents and democrats stayed home. The youth did not come out to vote or much would be different now or maybe not. I do not trust any republicans and I am very skeptical about most popular democrats. Still there are no true lefty libs in congress.

I do agree with you on many humanitarian issues, and I have drank many cups of coffee while conversing here. I would love to go fishing with your political views; I need some bait. :)

    • This is exactly what they want. They don't want average citizens having access to the internet because it's the last place on earth to get real news and the truth. They know progressives and liberals get their info off the net. Look at all the great stories that are contributed here at Current that I don't find or see anywhere else.
People like Boner just want people to listen to FOX news only. Can't have none of that truth telling. The Reps don't like it when anyone speaks truth to power.

I wish Boner would bake inside a tanning bed and never come out!

You should move out of our country; give yourself some peace. Obama is a populist if you had not noticed. If something is popular with the people he will get behind it. Any time he pisses me off I just Imagine that two-faced lying piece of shit McCain and I breath a sigh of relief. Congress has been fucking the country way longer than any one president and the highest court has bent to the will of the corporate elite. The sides are being drawn and it is not down party lines. The internet is the free-speech tool and most of us who use it get that.

Get the people out and Obama will be on their side. Look at California last election. One of the most progressive states on the issue could not even vote to decriminalize. I think many of the people involved in the black market trade of Mary Jane are holding back progress. It also does not help when voters stay home because they didn't get a quick fix to deep embedded problems with our government. 2012 looks to be a good voting year Thanks to the crippling effect of a republican led house. I want to see the decriminalization of all drugs and a campaign to treat addiction. More people are dying and becoming addicted to expensive legal drugs than the illegal ones, but for some reason this is ignored.
500 billion is what the war on drugs is costing the United States yearly; all extended costs figured in.

You are exactly right Leen61. This is the last area for truth. Judging from the response to Walkerism , nationwide protests, I can’t imagine there being anything but revolution if they try to shut the net down. At that point the youth will rise up in anger. After all, they have grown up with the internet. But, we should all be ready to respond to what is coming next. It seems like a battle has been started. http://sibob.org/wordpress/

Left or right is not the issue here. It's about the fat cats who can afford to buy the internet out from under the people who can't afford it. It's a tax bracket issue. Not a political one. I never said I was a big fan of Obama. Why should I be? He's as hot and heavy to get rid of net neutrality as well. I don't give 2 shits about whoever spreads the lies. All I care about is that I have the same access to the net that I've always had and to make up my own mind about who's lying and who's telling the truth.

    • “We’re also going to do what we can to see that no taxpayer dollars are used to fund these net neutrality rules,"

This should be heeded with the utmost preoccupation as one in a series of real shots recently fired on the people by one of the many and varied parasites encroaching -slowly but surely- on the rights of the population, and should be the 3-fire alarm that break out of their spell those still lost in a maze of smoke and mirrors, and who think that things will get better without them raising a finger, a voice and a fist.

Once control of the Internet is sold to monopolies (or once the sell is completed for it is underway as we speak) kiss goodbye your capacity to communicate ideas, organize actions and fight for rights and ideals.

Since the Wikileaks socio-political eruption took place, many established institutions (governmental and private alike ) have taken note and are hard at work dreaming up ways to limit, no, to vanquish the raising clamor of freedom from our generation by dismantling and transforming the best weapon ever handed to the people to fight the abuses of power from governments and corporations apparatuses into a useless gadget merely good enough to read online the latest Donald Rumsfeld’s piece of shit “book” or watch the latest episode of American Idol.

Our choices, should we decide to remain "comfortably numb" in the face of this threat, will be limited to

      Reluctantly Obey and Follow

      or

      Cheerfully Obey and Follow.

It’s our call, it’s our time, it is our fight.

      Just for the record....

Net neutrality essentially levels the playing field for commercial websites, ensuring that a small online bookstore can still receive visitors, even if sites such as Amazon.com or Barnes&Noble.com are statistically more popular. Under the philosophy of net neutrality, individual Internet service providers (ISPs), search engines and major online services like Yahoo, America Online (AOL) or Google cannot restrict or filter a user's access to rival companies. AOL, for example, cannot prevent one of its subscribers from receiving email from Yahoo accounts.

    • Although I applaud the effort, net neutrality is a pipe dream.

Expecting the 'core' (service providers) to be able to perpetually scale in response to the demands of the 'edge' (smart phones, tablets, Twitter, streaming video) is simply insane.

The capital expenditure required to meet the growing bandwidth demand is simply unsustainable.

Bitch all you want. Available bandwidth is limited and some type of tiered delivery is needed to insure that streaming video requirements and 911 calls are not interrupted by email and texts.

      This will not be free.

Net neutrality...is what it is....freedom. And yet the GOP and Mr Boner tries to convince everyone that neutrality means that we are getting a dictator.

Net neutrality equals free speech, and the absence of net neutrality allows the Corporate underworld to suppress the free speech of anyone they wish - an Olbermann, perhaps, speaking of Comcast in particular? Our government wishes to limit our evil Corporate overlords' abilities to suppress free speech by blocking any content they wish and, of course, the lie Boehner must tell implies that private parties must be allowed to suppress free speech. Can you imagine if phone companies could regulate who you could telephone?
