all these and more are why we started opensourceworld.us
we are hoping not only to share and provide greener solutions for living, but a platform for voices to be heard in the new media, which will hopefully mirror the old media in the sense that we return to a goal of truth, unbiased reporting, and serving the public good with the facts - 1 year ago

It won't end until we end it. And we won't end it until we know what we're dealing with. And the existence of the Tea Party makes it clear that we, collectively, do not know what we're dealing with. Capitalism means giving the best treatment to the clients who pay the bills. As long as advertisers pay the bills, news will cater to their needs. A news service financed by subscribers would cater to the subscribers' needs. If the cost was low enough, the subscriber base could be huge and allow for hard-hitting journalism without apology. The "common good" is the kind of phrase that corporatists like to equate with Marxist ideology, but in fact, it's even more American than apple pie, since its spirit lies at the heart of the preamble to the U.S. Constitution -- the common defense, the general welfare. Commercial and public media can't or won't do the job. It's up to us.

What is the Matrix? How deep does the rabbit hole go?
I agree that media reform is the most important issue, and the one with the most significant consequence to our democratic systems. Any form of democracy, such as our supposed republic, absolutely requires a well-informed public. Since corporations are allowed to tell us what to think, the effect is that the public will be misinformed in such a way that translates to the public voting against their own best interests and instead in the interests of corporations.
A dichotomy based on superficialities, propaganda, and lies is purposely used to divide the public into generally "liberal" or "conservative" camps. I used quotes because the media does not accurately represent true liberal or conservative ideas. A divided public will ignorantly argue and fight amongst itself instead of uniting under the common goal of ridding our government, our media, and our economic systems of corruption; to be told the truth; to hold governments, corporations, and wall street accountable for their actions; to replace systems that oppress the people and favor the corporations with fair systems that benefits each and every real human being.
The most powerful tool at the disposal of any controlling entity throughout history has always been perception control. For with this tool, they manufacture our consent -- they tell us things that make us feel like we agree with things that the government is doing (or they make us agree through fear) that we would not agree with if we were told the unbiased truth. This tool is so powerful, it has the masses of poor and middle classes accepting their unfulfilled lives while supporting the lavish lifestyles of those who enslave us with our labor, our blood, sweat, and tears.
They've created systems that benefit themselves at the expense of everyone else. These systems are mere perceptions. Money is a perception -- it only has the value we believe it does, it has no intrinsic value whatsoever. They have infiltrated our minds and made the masses accept that it is OK for a select few to ride on the backs of the rest of us. Without these manufactured perceptions, the masses would realize that the world is ours too and we would buck these slave masters off of our backs and trample them under our feet.
Here is a thought exercise meant to let you see things from a hypothetical perspective:
If a group of people, including yourself, became stranded on a remote island, would you share what the island had to offer (food, water, etc) with all, or would you give it all to just one person who would force you to work for a few scraps? Here, the manufactured perceptions of economies, privilege, and wealth are absent. If any one person tried to take control of the resources and use his power to enslave his fellow castaways, he would probably be bludgeoned to death. Don't you think? How, then, is it that in our current reality we allow a select few to control our resources? I submit that it is because our perceptions of our current reality have been bastardized by those who have everything and want to keep it.
Slavery is a perception.
Perceptions are very powerful indeed.

Excellent insight. Now, what do we do about it? Ironically, the Untied States of America was born out of rebellion and revolution against economic and political mistreatment of the privilaged class by distant colonial rulers. Today, current perception foolishly equates patriotism with going along with whatever the privilaged want for themselves while saying it's good for the rest of us. In the meantime, the idea of the masses working toward the common good equals communism, socialism, and dictatorship, rather than "all for one and one for all." It's equally foolish. Until a serious, outspoken leader with credibility and popularity calls ordinary people to take back the reins of power and join a modern revolution against economic and political corruption (without setting limits on what that revolution might require us to do) nothing will change. The powerful won't go willingly nor quietly. Moreover, we know power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. What is the likelyhood of a charismatic leader moving the masses to take control and win power back for the people, rather than for him/herself or the power elite all politicians answer to? President Obama gave us hope he could be that charismatic leader. Look what a bust he's turned out to be. Where do we go from here?

I honestly don't know what to do about it. That's where I'm lacking insight. I would say that somehow giving the masses the best tool they can possibly have (knowledge of the truth) would be the only way for things to really change. I don't know how plausible accomplishing that would be. People seem to be unwilling to wake up, because they do not realize that they're asleep. Perceptions change slowly. I know it was slow for me. The truth is inconceivable at first, and believing the fairy tale about how America is the freest and best-est country ever is a blissful and comfortable ignorance.

The corporations, including the US government, are working day and night to rob us of internet freedom. They stole broadcast media, print media, and cable media. When and if they do succeed to shut out free speech from the internet by owning it and turning it over to their entertainment executive managers, we'll have to come up with a new workaround.

Y is it that nothing ever happens in your town to help stomp out these people? Oh thats right you wouldnt have heard about that from anywhere, because they own all the information sources or at least those that are prominent and readily and cheaply available. Engineered that way too. Its called networking kids, get to calling all of your friends, schedule meetings with them and try to work out how you feel about it as a group, get in touch with other friends outside your immediate group and continue. This isnt Elitism, this isnt Class war, this is truly the American War, for Americans by Americans. A war on the manipulations of these puppetmasters. United WE Stand, Divided We Fall!!!

As with legislation called "jobs bills" which actually kill jobs, we are getting "net neutrality" legislation that ends net neutrality...and along with it, any free and open dissemination of information we have left in this country. It won't be long now. Thanks Al.
