Fukushima releasing more radiation than Chernobyl - TRYING TO STOP LEAKS WITH NEWSPAPER & SAWDUST WTF~

ejasun
Is Japan's nuclear crisis really as severe as Chernobyl?
I think it alarmed a lot of people that now suddenly the Japanese government is saying the nuclear crisis is on par with Chernobyl. Is that characterization accurate?

I think the Japanese authorities finally were forced to publicly recognize the severity of this disaster. They were trying to keep the public calm, to preserve some credibility for the nuclear power industry, so they tried to use reassuring language in their statements, and were hesitant to compare what was going on at Fukushima to Chernobyl. And, of course, it's not Chernobyl. It's different.

Chernobyl was an explosion that launched about a third of the reactor core thousands of feet into the air, injecting a hot plume of radioactivity into the upper atmosphere and contaminating large parts of Europe. That is not what's going on at Fukushima. But as an official said at the Tuesday press conference, Fukushima could ultimately release as much or more radiation than Chernobyl. It was that realization, I think, that was behind the re-categorization.

Is the situation deteriorating at the plant?

    • They may need to abandon the nuclear plant for 1,500 years... Now trying to incapsulate in 15' on cement. SOON TO BE A DEAD ZONE!

    • can anybody show the facts and figures about Chernobyl chemical contents? Radiation has cure... it can be done by using human shield who have anti-dote inside their body. How about the Chernobyl?

Fusion and Fission theory must be applied. cold and hot to penetrate the damage. This will not harmed anyone nor anybody once the human shield was being released who have the anti-dote inside their body.

    • I assert that NOBODY knows what is actually going on with this incident. What I can say for sure from my sources is that we will all suffer the effects of this disaster together.

    • Just. Terrifying? JAPAN "MOX NUKE RODS" MORE TOXIC THAN Chernobyl RODS:

FORBES: The Environmental Protection Agency yesterday reported finding elevated levels of iodine-131, a product of nuclear fission, in rainwater in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. The levels exceed the maximum contaminant level (MCL) permitted in drinking water, but EPA continues to assure the public there is no need for alarm?

    • I think the title to this post is misleading in saying that "Fukushima [is] releasing more radiation than Chernobyl". Level 7 does not indicate a direct radiation correlation.

      http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-13050228

Japanese authorities have raised the severity rating of the nuclear crisis at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi power plant to the highest level, seven.

The decision reflects the ongoing release of radiation, rather than a sudden deterioration. Level seven previously only applied to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, where 10 times as much radiation was emitted.

But most experts agree the two nuclear incidents are very different. Explore the table below to find out how they compare. (go to link for table)

      Radiation released:
Japan - 370,000 terabecquerels* (as of 12 April)
      Chernobyl - 5.2 million terabecquerels*

      **********************
It's still got a long time to go to reach the same level of radiation as Chernobyl, posting an article with that title is being rather alarmist, when the article clearly says, "Fukushima could ultimately release as much or more radiation than Chernobyl." COULD being the operator here.... and I COULD say anything I want. How about this... the world COULD explode by the end of 2012!!!!

We've got a million and one problems and this bitch is definitely one of them.... but it ain't the only one and it ain't the worst of them... not yet anyways... The Gulf issue is a likely contender....

    • just keep in mind that the radioactive output in fukushima will continue some month or even years.
every drop of water you put in that reactor building will get out again, either as steam (air) or as water (sea) carrying alot of radioactive isotopes with it.

so the cataclysmical result of this will show up in the near future.
the impact on the pacific ocean cannot estimated at the moment.

      fukushima will change the world.

      keep your eyes open.

Yes, and I guess we should all get the "duct tape and plastic" going here. Shez? In a world of all the modern technology, it is down to stuff like this? Newspaper, sawdust, duct tape and plastic.

"The duct tape alert refers to the recommendations made by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on February 10, 2003, that Americans should prepare for a biological, chemical, or radiological terrorist attack by assembling a "disaster supply kit"" (from wikipedia)

    • CBS News; maybe, you should also ask about the Plutonium and U oxide particles from the MOX spent/re-cycled fuel rods, and just what the dispersement ratio of those particles, just may be, per 3M/2M, in the air, water and or soil where they fall. Are there nano-particle dust of that as well as the proverbial 1 microgram of that substance is enought to kill a person, one often hears, as it's( one of) the world's most lethal substance(s) known to man? Could it hit Tokyo epidemically or not?
