Northern Maine Community College says its graduating class includes the first associate degree wind power technology students trained in New England.

A record 274 students will also take part in another first. Due to growing enrollment, the May 14 commencement ceremony will be held off campus, at the Forum in Presque Isle, for the first time in more than a generation.

Fourteen community college students will become the first to earn an associate degree in wind power technology from a higher education institution in Maine. Program instructor Wayne Kilcollins says companies involved in wind and other alternative energy industries have been recruiting graduates for employment.

      Invincible by MUSE

      Follow through
      Make your dreams come true
      Don't give up the fight
      You will be all right
Cause there's no one like you
      In the universe

      Don't be afraid
      What your mind conceals
      You should make a stand
Stand up for what you believe
And tonight we can truly say
      Together we're invincible

      And during the struggle
      They will pull us down
But please, please let's use this chance to
      Turn things around
And tonight we can truly say
      Together we're invincible

      Do it on your own
      Makes no difference to me
      What you leave behind
      What you choose to be
      and whatever they say
      Your soul's unbreakable

      And during the struggle
      They will pull us down
But please, please let's use this chance to
      Turn things around
And tonight we can truly say
      Together we're invincible
      Together we're invincible

      And during the struggle
      They will pull us down
Please, please let's use this chance to
      Turn things around
      And tonight we control history
      Together we're invincible
      Together we're invincible

"Bill McKibben, an American environmentalist, author, and educator will deliver the UMF Commencement address. McKibben, recognized by the Boston Globe as “probably the nation’s leading environmentalist,” has written extensively about climate change and founded 350.org, a grassroots movement dedicated to help people across the globe become aware of the severe consequences of global warming to all of Earth’s inhabitants.

“As one of Princeton Review’s recently named ‘green colleges,’ UMF is thrilled to have Bill McKibben bring his passion for the environment to our new graduates,” said Kalikow. “Throughout his career, he has led by example and has committed his time and talent to a cause he cares deeply about—a wonderful inspiration for our students as they take the skills and knowledge from their experience at UMF and go forward with the next steps in their lives.”

"University of Maine at Farmington will celebrate its 2011 commencement at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at an outdoor ceremony behind the UMF Olsen Student Center on the UMF campus."

Congratulations to the graduates! You have proven there are economic development opportunities in Aroostook County without even getting "off the reservation"! LOL!
      _______________________________________________________

"The governor's office has not confirmed that Gov. Paul LePage asked for the resignation of former commissioner of Economic and Community Development Philip Congdon (left). But what is known is that Congdon's resignation became effective immediately after Aroostook County Rep. John Martin dispatched a personal letter to the governor regarding some racially-charged remarks attributed to the commissioner during a Caribou Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet on April 1st."

"What Martin found out was that during an awards banquet in Caribou, members of the Aroostook County business community were initially excited to learn that a prominent member of LePage's cabinet had agreed to speak at their event.

But instead of offering an overview of economic development in the state or what programs the administration is developing that could assist northern Maine, DECD Commissioner Philip Congdon told those attending the conference that the nation's higher education system had been in decline ever since the civil rights movement resulted in more black Americans being admitted to colleges and universities under affirmative action programs.

Then he told those in the audience that they could forget about waiting for economic development opportunities to come to Aroostook County, and that if they wanted economic development they needed to "get off the reservation and make it happen."
